Sure is quiet out there tonight…
Posted by Tom Matthies on April 20, 2009 at 10:00 pm“Yea, a little TOO quiet” as they used to say in those old Westerns.
Surely there must have been some other news besides AJA’s new products from the Convention? (The LHi looks pretty nice, however…)

April 20, 2009 at 10:06 pmTom,
I’ve decided to begin a new career as a bookie, so I’m going to begin by taking bets on an FCP announcement at NAB. Here’s the morning line:
On an announcement of a new version of FCP at NAB – I’m giving 10 to 1 odds against. So, put up ten bucks to win $100.
Okay, anyone wanna put your money where your mouth is? You can’t win if you don’t play…

April 20, 2009 at 10:31 pmDecklink came out with a pretty setup for signal monitoring Ultra Scope.

$695 + a low cost PC gets you a 3Gb/s SDI Signal monitor. -

April 21, 2009 at 12:56 amOK, I’m in. So if there is a new FCP announcement you give $100 to my favourite charity. If there’s no announcement, I give $10 to your favourite charity.
Sound good?
Cheers

April 21, 2009 at 1:05 amUltrascope is very cool. It brings out my inner geek. I’ve been looking on-line for a used Videotek rasterizer but this will work just fine as well!
Besides FCP announcements I’m also looking for cost effective RAID options and Video I/O boards. It looks like the AJA LHi will be on the list for sure.

April 21, 2009 at 1:12 amTom, I’m got a question for you. I have an old Videotek 330E that I have yet to integrate into my system. Can that be used for HD content? I mean, if I sent my primary out from my Kona 3 to my HD studio monitor, and then sent my secondary out as standard def to the Videotek and then out to my SD studio monitor, would that be accurate for HD, or would that not work since it’s designed with NTSC/rec.601 in mind?

“Heck, I need the dough myself, so no deal.

April 21, 2009 at 1:32 amI can’t remember a more undramatic Monday night of NAB.
Okay, I’m not in the market for any particular gear at the moment, and I’m not as technically astute as many of you, but still — doesn’t this seem unusually quiet?
Right — “TOO quiet.”

April 21, 2009 at 1:55 amAttendance is way down from prior years, but there’s still whole lot of people here.
Consensus from vendors I’ve met is that the traffic is down, but that’s not necessarily bad. Fewer “tire kickers” and more serious prospects.
It’s also easier to get a cab.

April 21, 2009 at 2:36 amHi Brad.
You should be able to get very close to the “ball park” with your arrangement. There could still be some gamut errors that might not show up in SD, but you’ll be very close. Right now I use an SD Tektronix 1740 looking at SD for my scope. Even though I output some projects in HD, I have to admit that I really don’t have a good way to monitor my HD signal. So far, I’ve had nothing rejected…knock on wood.
PS-If you ever want to get rid of that Videotek unit…
