  • Importing AVCHD footage into FCP 6

Posted by Evan John on March 5, 2009 at 5:02 pm

I have a prospective client who has material shot in AVCHD format using a Sony HDR-SR10. I want to make sure there are no hitches when I capture – or if it as at all possible first. He is bringing over his camera as well an external hard drive with theAVCHD footage on it to import/capture.

As far as I understand from reading posts here, FCP 6 does not formally recognize AVCHD, so I will have to transcode the footage into ProRes. But what is the best method to do so? I am working on a 2.8Ghz Quad Mac Pro if that helps.

    Thanks.

You use the LOG AND TRANSFER option in FCP, in the FILE menu.

Thanks Shane. I was under the impression that it was not so simple.

Does Log and Transfer work just for the camera itself, or can I use this method with the files he has on the external hard drive as well?

SHould work for both. Just point L&T to the folder containing the media and it should fill up the browser for import. You click on the FOLDER icon on the upper left to browse for your media.

Any luck with this workflow as I’m having problems with the same issue.

I have a client who has transferred avchd clips from memory cards onto a NTFS hard drive. I have tried using the log and transfer window to import the .m2ts files but they are greyed out.

    I’m using FCS2 and a Mac Pro.

Any ideas? I have access to the memory cards and/or can have the files dumped onto a mac journaled drive.

    Thanks Tai

    Hey Shane,

So I have the footage here – it’s the .mts format and FCP’s Log and Transfer is not recognizing it. I also attempted to bring in the whole folder from the drive containing all the additional files that associate with the clips and no luck.

    Any other suggestions?

Dunno what to say. I have footage from a few PANASONIC AVCHD cameras and they all work with Log and Transfer. Why Sony isn’t I have no idea. I hope they don’t have a different flavor.

I hope someone with Sony AVCHD experience will help you with this.

Even after using the Sony provided program to convert mts to the m2ts file format on my client’s PC, FCP did not recognize the files in the Log and Transfer. I guess I am out of luck.

I seem to remember having to install some kind of codec or something into final cut, in order to use my personal Canon camcorder (AVCHD footage). After troubleshooting on the phone with Canon, it works perfectly as Shane has mentioned.

Maybe a call to Sony may solve your problem, or google “sony avchd”.

    Hi Evan,

Shane Ross’ advice should work (though I’ve only tried with a Panasonic myself), but it will only work with FCP 6.0.1, 6.0 doesn’t support AVCHD – more here

    good luck!

I am a newbie to FCP. i am using the latest version of FCP Studio on a MacBook Pro (Intel) with the Snow Leopard OS. My camera is a Canon HG10, which records AVCHD files directly to the camera’s Hard Drive.

I achieved success by transferring my files from the camera to my Computer via USB. I had about 4GB of video, which took about 5 minutes to transfer.

Next, I opened up FCP and then clicked on the log and transfer option. There is an “Add Volume” option in the upper left hand corner (It is an icon). I clicked on that and found my Canon Video Folder. FCP automatically loaded the clips into the queue.

I selected “ALL” of the clips to process and pressed “Auto Transfer”. The rest was done automatically for me by FCP.
