    Hi all,
Searched the archive for a similar problem with no luck… lots of render crashes but usually related to export.

I’ve been cutting a project at work and have needed to edit at home with my Macbook. 10 min run time with lots of layers, color keys and graphic overlays, it take better then an hour to render when it works. When I go to render a clip or sequence on the mac book intermittently I get a hard crash where the screen wipes transparent grey and tells me to turn off the computer. Early with this same project I was experiencing a jitter or reverse render on my NTSC monitor I have since corrected with field shift filter. Did not catch the upper field fist on the converted HD stuff when I down converted. But if there a clips on the same time line with different field dominance could that cause a problem. As I’m thinking about this right now the problem might be presenting itself when rendering around the spots where I have used older standard def footage from previous projects… same codec though (apple prores hq) hmmm? Also I had a few times where the render was corrupt with lines running through it. It all works great at work using same projectfile and driveson my Mac Pro system.

This has not happened on my macbook computer before this project.

Thing that are different with this project:
-Original footage 1080 60i HD converted to apple prores HQ 720 x 486.
-Combining 480i footage with this new stuff.
    – field dominance mixing although all looks correct on ntsc monitor.
    – 2 drives being used
    – 2 monitor display with project and timeline on secondary monitor

So anyway, what’s the problem? 2 drives? or the monitors? field dominance? All of the above? I’m pretty sure I’ve had drives both on FW 800 as well as both on esata and now split with the same problem. Why would it all work on the system at my office? Could kona be helping with something the Macbook system can not?

Let me know if anyone has any thoughts on this one.

    Thanks!

    Hi Thomas,
Mixing footage with different field orders shouldn’t be a problem as long as the Shift-fields is applied when needed.
Neither mixing old with new footage, using two drives (unless there is a formating problem or so) or the use of a new monitor.
In those cases what I suggest is maintenance. Don’t blame FC of any malfunction before to make sure your system is optimized: Cleaning caches, repair permission, rebuild directories, files “Finder Info”, etc.
    Cheers,
    Rafael

I have had similer issues when using esata cards on my MBP. Does the same thing happen when they are hooked up via FireWire 800.

Thanks for the help! I looked further into the griffen esata express card that I’m using and found this thread on apple discussion.
    http//discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?meassageID=5898831

After the crashes that I’ve been having all of the reports that come up after re-boot reference a “Kernal Panic”. The chip 3132 is common in many of the esata cards and there appears to be a conflict between the card and osx 10.5.

Does not sound like there is a solution. Many blame card, many blame apple, some blame drives. I’m not sure what to do.. I would really like to to get the extra speed from the card… When its working, its great.
But now with this project I’m unable to render out the timeline without the screen of death and a instructions to turn off power. I’m sure FW 800 would work, I just need to move a bunch of data around first cause the segate drive I’m using is only esata or Fw 400. I’ll probably head in to the office tonight so I cam complete the project.

Any other ideas or insight would be appreciated

    Thanks!

I have tried different cards, different cards with different chipsets, different every thing. And have still not been able to come up with a solution. I eventually got a FW800 Express card so that I could keep my deck and my drives on different buses. That has worked fine for me, so I don’t see how it could be the computer.

I wish I had an answer for you.

The segate extream (1.5t) drive I’m using has esata, 400, or usb 2 as options. had no 400 cable at home here but found a usb 2 cable. I chucked the esata card…would you believe its not much slower and no crashes!
What I can’t figure is why it became so chronic, really only with FCP. It only crashed when I was trying to render or export.
Infact I’ve had this card for well over 5 months and used it with out trouble thats why my original post was focused on the problem being with FCP.

In addition we shot on hpx500 P2 in studio for 4 days last week (HD 1080i 60i) and I used this same rig to dump media, a couple terabites worth, with P2 veiwer and CMS, never had one crash.

Wonder why FCP and this project agrivate the esata card so much?
I got the card at the Mac store wonder if I can get a refund?

Well anyway things seem to be working now but slooowly.

I’m working with the eSATA card of LaCie and not a single problem.
However I’m unable to work with the FW 800 card of Sonnet.
I bought the first one and no way. I thought that could be a problem of the card, so I bought a seccond one (for me was cheaper to buy a new one that to ask for the replacement) and the same problem.
I can not write in the HDs.
I sow Thomas that you have your media drives “Journaled”. Except for some Raid systems, the media HDs have bee always recommended to let them “No Journaled”. However I don’t think this have nothing to do with your crashes.
    Cheers,
    Rafael
