So, before I had a problem with some subclips going offline and trying to to reconnect them. In the process of trying to fix that, i re-arranged some stuff in the scratch drive, deleted some preferences and then emptied the trash. As soon as I emptied the trash, FCP refused to open. I click on the icon, and NOTHING happens. It bounces once and that’s it. I try to open a project file and the same thing. NOTHING happens. My instinct would be to just reinstall FCP, but I really don’t have time to do that, especially since I would also need to update it…

Any ideas of how I did this and what I can do to fix it?

    Thanks.

[Sam Pope] “My instinct would be to just reinstall FCP”

That should be the absolute last instinct you should ever have Sam. Clearly your tinkering with files seems to have created this problem.

    Here’s what I would do…

    1. Trash your prefs again

    2. Open a new project in FCP and test to see that everything works.

    3. If it does, you’d better start figuring out what the heck you did to your old project when moving those files.

Yeah, that was the first thing that I did – trash my preferences again. But still nothing. I click on the FCP icon, in the dock and nothing happens. It doesn’t even try to open. Same if I click on any project files.

I really have no idea what to do…

    Thank You.

Try to install the last FC update that you had already install.
If the system don’t let you install it, delete the receipt corresponding to that installation.

Have you tried double-clicking on the application icon itself, in the apps folder? Sometimes a dock icon becomes disassociated with the application it represents. Worth a try…

I just made a post on fixing some issues with FCP on 10.5.6. https://www.uncarvedblog.com/files/17e6d3fd887301579e655aa7cb9d7b3e-37.php
Maybe it can help you too.
    look towards the bottom of the post, you can find links to these tools;
    PrefTrasher
    FCS Remover
basically, you need to trash Prefs (use PrefTrasher), and the cache folders (thumbnail, waveform), mostly it works.
if not, and you have to re-install, use FCS remover (many folders are strewn across the System, very hard to do manually).
    it solved my issues.
before re-installing, try in a diffrent user account, safe boot, permissions etc. (surly you already did that…)
    hope it works
