Print to Tape from Apple Pro Res
HI,
I captured HDV to Apple Pro Res, edited my movie, and am now trying to print to tape on a Canon Hv30. The HV30 is recognized by the Mac, but once I start trying to print to tape, it is always on the blue screen, even if I enter REC PAUSE mode.
I have tried different settings in the AudioVideo settings and nothing seems to work. Here’s what i have:

Audio DefaultIn the Video part, all I can see are a bunch of MXO presets from the MXO Matrox, Apple Firewire (DV, not HDV) and Cinema Display Playback options.
How do i get my ProRes sequence, onto tape so i can later make a HD master if I want?

Exactly why would you want to print HDV back to tape?
Unlike most other formats there’s a bad MPEG compression hit, and at just 13gb per hour there’s no big need to clear the file from your hard drives. Plus, as you’ve found, it’s a pain in the butt.

Well, my thought was to keep a HD copy of the weddings I do so that in the future when i upgrade to bluray burners, I could have a good HD master to burn.
Most of the weddings seem to average about 100 gigs (around 2 hours, sometimes 2 and a half). It’s all Apple Pro Res imported and exported so I guess that accounts for the greater file size.
I was thinking that now though that maybe I’d just trash these weddings and whenever I do upgrade to bluray, just use whatever weddings I am shooting at the time. I just liked a few of these weddings i’ve done and wanted to have them as samples as well.

Well, that’s understandable… I’d probably just consider archiving to hard drive for just a while longer. Hard drives are so incredibly cheap now, and you can keep your ProRes in it’s full glory too.

I guess that is true. I was hoping to clear up this particular hard drive, but maybe Ill back it up to my USB external drive for now. Thanks! I give up on the print to tape option. I’ve wasted 2 hours now trying to find a solution and it seem… NADA from everywhere! I love technology… when it does what I want!

This is all besides the point. Once you captured as ProRes, you cannot PRINT TO TAPE or PRINT TO VIDEO to HDV cameras or decks via firewire. This would only work if you captured and edited as HDV. Once you captured as another format, this option is no longer available. Not without a capture card.

Oh! I didn’t realize that at all! Well that changes things then. I was importing as Pro Res because of reading several articles about the benefits.

This article says you can do it, but you have to conform the prores back to HDV, but doesn’t explain the actual setup.
In any case, I believe I’ll just give it up for now. Too much trouble.

You would either use compressor to transcode, or change the compressor setting in the Sequence>>Settings, re-render, and export a QT using current settings, etc., etc., etc.

Oh, if you conform BACK to HDV then you lost any benefit you gained capturing as ProRes. In fact, it would be worse because you compressed to another format then compressed BACK to HDV.
This is another prime example of know your workflow BEFORE you capture. Know what you want to deliver and how you want to archive.
