HDV or ProRes ?
Posted by Fredy Schwerdtner on December 22, 2008 at 5:32 amHi Everybody ….
Could someone tell me when should I capture HDV footage as simple HDV and when should it be done as Pro Res and also the advantages of each one ?
Thanks in advance …..Walter Biscardi replied 17 years, 4 months ago 3 Members · 2 Replies -

I think that some versions ago FC was no much capable of handing HDV (MPG-2 in general) properly, so capturing ProRess was a meaning of making the editing easier.
Capturing ProRess can be interesting for multi-layer editing because you will always process an intraframe format easier than a GOP format.
Capturing ProRess through a good video-card is also the best way to upgrade your 420 footage to 422 with a good Chroma filtering. To get the same in post takes long rendering times.

We convert all HDV to DVCPro HD during ingest using our AJA Kona boards. Not a big fan of ProRes for editing yet as we’ve had sporadic codec issues that are just enough to make me not trust the format yet. Maybe if Apple updates the codec at NAB.
I do use ProRes when rendering out of Color as we have had no issues doing this.
