FCP 5.1 ‘Out of Memory’ Message, Trying to do MultiCam Edit
I just began trying to edit a project using the Multi-Cam Edit feature on FCP 5.1. When I try to open my multiclip in the viewer I’m getting “general error” followed by “out of memory” messages.
I’ve tried playing with the scratch disk, cleared my hard-drive of excess crap… No luck.
*Its worth noting: in my situation I didn’t do a standard capture, I imported 5 quicktime files that were shot using flip video cams. Could this be my issue?

In my experience a General Error most often results from using clips that don’t have a proper FCP-acceptable frame rate, or have frames that intermittently vary in length.Either use QuickTime Player to Export new movies with a correct fps rate, or use Cinema Tools to Conform your existing clips to their proper frame rate.

Often this issue can only be fixed by reverting to a previous auto-save. You’ll find numerous threads here about this if you search.
Trashing render files manually might do it – but often it seems to be a corruption in the project file.

Post the format that these cameras shoot, I’m thinking much like Paul… bet it’s not directly supported by FCP… and transcoding it all will clear this up.

You’re using 5.1
Apple has made many, many improvements specifically in Multi-cam performance since then.
The best thing you can do is upgrade to the current level. Until then, you’re going to be struggling with issues that have already been addressed. Do yourself a favor… upgrade now.

I have a couple of issues –
I have 15 cameras on a concert, that is 1 hour 40 mins and have grouped together the first batch,
however when trying to create the next multiclip, I get a message ‘Couldn’t create the clip
because exceeds maximum duration of 12 hours (or 6 hrs for sequences with high audio rates)
the only difference with this grouping is that some are sub clips due to tape changes or recording stops.I hope this is a setting somewhere, which I can’t find, otherwise kind of defeats the multiclip purpose?
Next problem is that I can’t edit with the 15 cameras as the viewer stops after a few seconds,
I am guessing this may be a RAM/processor problem…seems ok with 7 or 8 cameras though.Thanks for any advice.

I can’t offer any advice on your first problem but for the issue of playback with 15 cameras…. have you tried changing the RT settings to help ease the playback congestion? You may have done this already but if not, just left to the sequence playhead is the RT tab: you might find that you are able to run all 15 by changing the settings to
unlimited
play base layer only
PVQ: low
PFR: low
multiclip playback*note: make sure you also have record to tape set to full quality or upon final edits switch settings back to dynamic before exporting or converting.
