Green Screen to Flash Video (Website)
Posted by Frank Philip on October 25, 2008 at 3:24 amI have a project that entails putting a green screen shot on a website. Obviously the green screen will be keyed out, but I wanted to know how to make it appear on a website with a transparent background. I noticed in FCP that once the key is completed and the playhead has stopped you’ll see the checkerboard background. Once I hit play it’s gone and you see a black background.
I exported the file as a FLV but don’t have a player to view it. I assume it will work but I don’t know.
An example of what I’m talking about is: http://www.scorpionhealthcare.com
Thanks,
Frank

October 25, 2008 at 11:49 amFlash accepts alpha channels. To export an alpha channel from FCP, you need to leave your sequence unrendered and then choose Export > Quicktime Conversion and choose the codec as Animation and the colors as millions+. This will give you an QT movie with an alpha channel. From there, you can make a flash with an alpha as long as your QT exported ok from FCP with tranparency in tact.

October 25, 2008 at 11:51 amHi Frank,
If you want to keep the background transparent, you need to export your Flash file preserving the Alpha channel.
I don’t work with Flash but as long as I know it support Alpha channel. You shouldn’t have problem to get the effect of the lady in the “Scorpion” web site.
As I said before I’ve never done that, so to avoid problems I would set my FC sequence in Animation “Millions+” to make sure that the Alpha remains.

Thanks for the tips! I did exactly what you’re saying to do. Just curious, when I exported the QT file with the video codec set to “Animation” with million colors+ I still see the black bkgd in the QT Player. Is this right? Another question, for the Sequence settings should pixel aspect ratio be set to square since it’s for the web?
I guess for this all to work I need Adobe Flash Professional now?
Thanks guys!

yes. QT will fill the transparent area with black.[Frank Philip] “Sequence settings should pixel aspect ratio be set to square since it’s for the web? “
Yes. Build your sequence with square pixels so what you get in the FC’s Canvas will keep the same aspect when exported to Flash or QT.

October 25, 2008 at 8:45 pmFrank, make sure your sequence is UNRENDERED!!! Very important.
After you export your movie, bring it back in to FCP and put it on track 2. Then put a color solid on track 1 and make sure your transparency is there.

Jeremy, I think this has been improved in FCP. At the urging of others, I have attempted to export a clip that has a chromakey filter attached to it. The clip exported with alpha regardless of the render status. it was cool. And about freakin’ time. Seems to still work on my machine, might want to try it sometime and see if it works on your system (I’m FCP6.0.4/OS10.411, QT something or other).
A real time saver and smooth workflow enhancement.bogiesan
This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Oh, no kidding? I will give it a shot!
Thanks for the update.
Do you leave an empty track below the video for transparency? Or do you just put your timeline in the Animation codec?

March 18, 2009 at 12:09 amHello.
I was reading this fabulous thread and could use some more help.
I created the flv file (it is definitely transparent since I can bring it into flash and put color behind it)
I cannot bring it into Lectora (the program building the elearning piece I am creating)
Do you know why? When I bring it in, it just shows up as a white box…I can’t figure it out and Lectora does not seem to have any help on it’s website.
I have tried bringing it in as video and as animation…at a loss…
Thanks for any and all help.

March 18, 2009 at 12:14 amI should be more specific in that when I bring the flv in as video – it puts a black background on the video (i.e., it’s no longer transparent/white)
How do I get rid of the background it added?

March 18, 2009 at 2:31 amI don’t know anything about that program, but I can make two guesses.
It doesn’t understand transparency.
or
You need to tell it that there’s an alpha channel in the footage becuase it seems to be ignoring it.
