Sony V1U capture issues
I’ve searched every thread here without a solution.
Brand new client owned Sony V1U is misbehaving with FCP6. FCP is seeing TC breaks that don’t exist.
These are not camera starts and stops.
FCP is creating 4 to 5 separate clips per minute of running time. So, if I shoot a minute of anything, then turn off th camera and digitize that one clip, FCP creates 5 incomplete clips.
This is happening at 1080i and 30p, using HDV 1080i60 Easy Setup, which I know to be the proper Easy Setup.
Any solutions out there?

I usually work with HDV using the “Poisson method,” and I was gonna try that, but I didn’t really want to do it in this case, as I’m setting up an entirely new multi-cam workflow for this client. But I may have to.
BTW, is your suggestion based upon a known issue with these cameras?

Nope…this is based on not liking the HDV format. I get out of that format as soon as I can. But I have only worked with HDV twice. Thank goodness.

What’s the whole configuration of your set-up, computer, camera, drives, how are they all connected, how are the drives formatted? It should work. I assume FCP is recognizing the camera and accepting in and out points correctly.

G5 – dual 2.3Ghz
5.5Gb RAM
4-bay 2Tb SATA Raid-0 with 225mbps throughput – Mac extended (non-journaled)Camera is recognized via firewire 400 and in/outs are recognized, etc., etc., etc.
BTW, the same config works perfectly with a Z1, it’s these V1Us that are causing me problems.
Very wierd science going on here… Let me know if you have an idea. I’m stumped.

Don’t understand it. You are using the rear FireWire port on the G5, aren’t you? That’s the only thing I can think of.
I guess I’d try trashing prefs, repairing permissions and reboot. See if it will capture into a new user.

I guess it couldn’t hurt to try all the standard things…

So, after exhaustive testing I’ve discovered that, with the Sony V1U, I can accurately capture HDV to ProRes on the fly via Firewire (using the Poisson method), but I can’t capture HDV native via Firewire without vast numbers of phony tiimecode breaks.
That’s simply bassakwards from the way it should work and did work. It seems to me that Apple has messed-up its firewire protocol somewhere along the line in one of their QT or ProApps updates. Many of those posting similar issues here over the last few months, that appeared to be dropped frames, were apparently related to messy changes to the firewire protocol.
