  • Logging vs Capture Now problems

This problem is driving me nuts:
If I log a clip in the logging/capture window of FCP 5, and then let Final Cut capture it (ie. it rewinds the tape, captures from my in point to my out point), the audio is out of sync by about 1 second of the resulting clip.
BUT if I simply hit play on the camera, and press the Capture Now button, the audio is perfectly in sync in the resulting clip.
My audio has been recorded in 16bit 48Khz and all my sequence and capturing settings match this. It’s PAL footage.
I find it odd and frustrating that it is out of sync when using the logging feature.
Whether it’s a 5sec clip or a 45min clip, this is still the problem.
I looked into the “Capture Offset” setting, but in the Final Cut Pro User Manual, it says this about this setting:

“Note: This is not an issue when you capture DV video via FireWire, since both timecode and video data are transferred via the same FireWire cable.”

So it seems this setting isn’t my issue since I’m using firewire…

Any suggestions why I’m having this problem?

    Hi Michael,
Open your clips in QT and see if the out of syncs it happens.
FC makes an off-set of audio/video for preview.
Go to System Preferences> Playback Control> Frame Offset and adjust it.

    Hi Rafael,
    Thanks for your reply.
When I open the clip in Quicktime, the audio is still out of sync. Exactly the same as in FCP.
The Frame Offset setting you speak of is set to 4. I’m pretty sure that setting is only used when using an extermal video output, like an external monitor.
    FCP User Manual:

“By changing the frame offset value in Final Cut Pro, you can compensate for the delay between your computer display and external video and audio outputs.”

I could be wrong, but I don’t think this is the setting I’m after.
    Or is it?

is it just the pal tape?

how does ntsc capture over firewire for you right now?

if it only happens with the pal, I would just manually
nudge the audio and call it one of those weird unsolvable
    problems for now.

    Hi Chris,
    Thanks for the reply.
How can I capture NTSC? I have a PAL camera with PAL tapes and I’m in Australia. So NTSC stuff is kinda hard to come by.
I haven’t had this problem before with final cut, which is why I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it. But the problem still remains 🙁
And I can’t think of anything I’ve done to the system to make it do this.

Could it be an issue with the tape? I thought maybe a quicktime codec has gone wrong, but if that was the case, wouldn’t it be out of sync when I do a capture now too? Cos it’s fine when I “capture now”.
    Any other suggestions?

Which version of FCP 5 are you running? 5.1 had capture issues. I think they were fixed in 5.14

Pretty tough at this point. You had to trade your discs with Apple to get the universal binary upgrade to 5.1, which Apple quit supporting a long time ago, shortly after FCS2 was released.
