DV to 8bit issues…still
Hi,
I have posted before on this topic but I still can’t get it to work.
I have a DV movie with a 16:9 mask, with subtitles etc, I would like to make it 8 bit so to have better lower thirds and over all graphics.
I have created a new easy set up and new timeline with the 8 bit codec, I have tested a chunk of the film I have rendered it in the 8 bit timeline and then exported with current settings, but the aspect ratio changes and it’s squeezed..I know that 8 bit is 720 x 486 and DV 720 x 480 but I thought that once rendered in 8 bit it wouldn’t be an issue.
Is there a way that I can change this? Or not?

No necessary. You can make a 8b seq with 720×480.

Where do you see the aspect to change? In QT? That is normal. QT read square pixels.
if your picture look OK in the FC Canvas, then is OK. Will be OK when printed to video or when you make a DVD.
If you want your NTSC picture to be displayed as 4×3 in QT, you need to adjust QT player.

It is a relief, I have tried to adjust QT while viewing it but with no success. I am sure it is right under my nose.

Would you use compressor and export it for DVD 120 min high quality, or would you let DVDSP do the compression?

You don’t have to go through all this, all you have to do is change your compressor in the DV sequence to 8bit, render and you’re done. Go to Sequence>settings and change the compressor drop down.

I have noticed that when I do that (just change the compressor setting) I only have to re render a few clips, but when I do a new set up then a new sequence I have to render the whole timeline.
do you know why?

Sorry if you didn’t understand me.
As I wrote ” you only needed to change the compressor”.
I didn’t suggest you to make a 720×486 8b sequence.

That is not fully truth.
You can perfectly work 8b 720×480.
Easier to work with DV footage.

Yes DV is definitely easier to work with, I just want to render in 8 bit so to have better looking subtitles cause in DV no matter what I make them with (livetype-AE) they still look fuzzy after export, but when I do in 8 bit they are super clean.
I have tried to change the aspect ratio in QT on the settings but I can’t get it to look right.

Paolo,
You can get even better results applying some Chroma Smoothing filter to your DV footage (Nattress), then choose “Render all YUV material in High Precision” and set 10b Unc or PrRes HQ as your codec.
make all your editing in DV and change the sequence setting right before rendering.
