The old pre-roll timecode chestnut,,,
I’ve done a lot of trawling round on the internet to try and find a solution to this problem and have tried Sebsky Tools (package won’t open on the computer – tried on 3 different machines running Tiger & Leopard). I’ve also tried SimpleVideo Out and although I’ve managed to export a video from Final Cut (exporting using the correct ‘Quicktime Video’ and not quicktime conversion method).
The Mac pics up the deck (an old DSR-11 – which I know doesn’t let me pre-set timecode and this is why I’m having to try all possible workarounds) because I can see it in System Profiler info. Final Cut will even still print to tape…but when I play my video through SimpleVideo Out, it just will not do anything on the tape.
The timecode as displayed on my monitor just continues to say 00:00:00:00 and when I play it back, even if I’ve managed to record content via Final Cut, the timecode still says 00:00:00:00.
I’ve set the ‘DV IN TC’ to External and ‘REC MODE’ is in DVCAM. All settings on the front and back of deck are correct as far as I am aware…so why O why, doesn’t it want to do it??
I’m sort of at my wits end 🙁

You mean stays at 00:00:00:00 (which is a deck fault), or starts there, and increments as normal.When you play SimpleVideoOut, the movie’s timecode should be shown on the DSR-11’s monitor display as soon as you press the red Record button, with the deck paused (with your DVCAM/Ext.Timecode settings).

When DV IN TC is set to external, it just doesn’t seem to want to do anything with the timecode – not in DV mode anyway (as set on the front). If I move the switch over to video (just experimenting) the timecode will change.
But if I’ve already tried to record content from SimpleVideo Out and it’s simply put a timecode of 00:00:00:00 on, then I seem to remember that if I printed to tape via Final Cut, the timecode still just stayed at 00:00:00:00 and does not increase.
I reset the unit incase there was a rough menu setting somewhere, but this hasn’t solved the problem either. The deck just doesn’t seem to want to pick up external content at all. I tried using a PD-150 yesterday also and this didn’t work either.
It seems to be the deck is the bain of all my issues…

Do search on this forum for DSR-11 and you will find a information on how to do an edit to tape on a dsr 11 with accurate tc.
I cannot remember if it was shane or bob z who wrote it, but its been covered here,
set your search for at least a year back

The DSR-11 isn’t picking up a signal via firewire from any other source than FCP, that’s more my issue than anything. I know how to pre-role TC with a DSR-11 using various work arounds, but the Deck doesn’t seem to be picking up external time code at all, so all methods are futile are far as I can see. I’m looking for a hidden menu option or setting that I may have missed so that the Mac will communicate with the deck without having Final Cut involvement – which I know will not send my timecode to the deck.

My old notes on the another model, the DSR-45, say to set DV IN TC to INTERNAL. It’s completely non-intuitive. Can you try that and see if it works?

Here’s my stored note on the complete list of settings:
Input Selection on front panel set to DV
Device in Remote mode
Menu Setup:
TC/UB SET: DV TC IN – INTERNAL
TC/UB SET: TC MAKE REGEN
TC/UB SET: TC RUN FREE RUN
TC/UB SET: JOG TC OUT OFF
DISPLAY SET: PB/EE SEL – EE
REC SET: REC MODE DV or DVCAM (should match your tape type)Hope it helps you!

Not with a DSR-11.
Mine needs EXT TC to see SimpleVideoOut’s timecode.I’m still using Tiger – SimpleVideoOut is a legacy application, last updated (v2.0.6) in 2005:

It sounds like you don’t have the DSR-11 set right. Check in the DSR-11 manual to see how to set it up for external TC.

Don’t ever set any TC generator in FREE RUN.
You should have a REC RUN. try it.

I’ve tried on Tiger (which is what we have at work) and that’s where I’m having the problem. Didn’t give it a go on Leopard, but couldn’t open Sebsky tools on Tiger or Leopard…
We’re getting a new deck I think, too much time wasted with this old one!
