  exporting Stills from HDV sequence? FCP 6.0.4

  Am using FCP version 6.0.4 with Quicktime 7.5 on Mac..

  The problem is that when exporting a still image from an HDV sequence it is squished – making the image taller and skinnier.

  I have tried converting the HDV sequence freeze frame into an SD sequence and exporting a still image from that SD sequence but then am getting an image that is again squished – making it shorter and fatter than the original.

  In the past, using SD source it was a no-brainer and a simple export as still image.
  Does HD Final Cut Pro need a bug fix to export stills and get an end result that is the same dimentions and look of the original? or is there a way around it?

  Please advise on how to pull a still from my HDV source footage..
  something so simple – embarrassing – what am I not doing? Tried jpeg then tiff – uncompressed setting – all the same result-stretched.

  Debbi,

  Unfortunately, FCP exports anamorphic stills from anamorphic video, requiring a two step process that entails resizing in Photoshop.

  So, bring the stills you export from FCP into Photoshop, turn off the maintain ratio constraint, and resize as 1920×1080.

  Thanks David,

  As I did not have photoshop on my laptop – out of desperation I found a way – and want to share…

  1. Stay out of final cut..
  2. Open the HD source file straight from the drive in Quicktime.
  3. find your frame and save as a still from there.

  Quicktime does not stretch the image.

  I often forget that while QT Conversion inside FCP seems at times to work excatly like QT Pro, it’s really a different beast altogether and has different rules and conventions.

  That’s a good find…

  I would strongly suggest that for those of you doing this kind of still exporting you do NOT go the Quicktime route. I just did a test, and the FCP still output, resized in Photoshop is much higher quality.
