cant preview the whole thing
hi, im new to after effects and i know this is a novice question but bare with me. Im trying to do a ram preview of my movie but the preview stops after around ten seconds of the movie. This green strip thing (sorry!) which is at the top of the timeline only goes up to ten seconds so i guess this is to do with it but i cant get it to go any further. I really need to preview the whole thing, so any help would be great. thanks

It has to do with the amount of ram on your computer. Your computer doesn’t have enough. Your comp has either too many effects to render at once or it is too long of a timeline. You will only be able to view it in sections. The time will vary according to how many actions AE has to render. Basically, get more ram.

there are 2 little pulldowns at the bottom of your preview window, one has a percent value(probably 100%), the other a term for a fraction (probably full). you can change those settings to help render more of your comp and render it more quickly.
try setting the percent to a lower number, try 50%. this will decrease the preview size by half (don’t worry this is for preview only, your comp is not effected). and generally you’ll also set the other pulldown to a corresponding fraction.. ‘half,’ in this case.

as dave mentioned you can set the preview to skip ‘x’ frames fromt he time controls window to lengthen your ram preview even further.
if you limit your work area as dave mentioned, make sure you expand it back to the full length needed before render, or change the render setting for time span to length of comp, otherwise you will only render your defined workarea.

RAM Preview can also be set to begin the preview from the playhead’s current position in the timeline.
