  • How do I view the image on my moniter in real time?

Posted by Sally Obrien on May 29, 2008 at 2:50 am

What device do I need to be able to view the video on my moniter in real time? When I’m editing right now I have firewire connected to my camera, and then AV plug-ins go from there to the television (so there’s a 1 second delay or so).

Are you talking about DV? The lag is the time to make the digital to analog conversion. You can’t get rid of it.

    Hi Sally,
Try adjusting: System Setting> Playback Control> Frame Offset.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

That adjusts the audio timing on the computer to match the video on the external monitor. It’s not a function that should be used.

I guess I was wondering if there was something similar to the Matrox Breakout box that Adobe Premiere uses. When I’ve used that on Premiere there’s no delay from Computer moniter to the TV screen.

    You are absolutely right Tom.
Sorry Sally. I’ve read your post to fast. Thought you were talking about the audio delay.
As Tom says, there is nothing to do. The signal takes longer to get in your monitor than in your Mac screen.

Well…yeah. There is the Matrox MXO. Bonus with that is that you can use your Apple Cinema Display as an HD broadcast quality color correction monitor.

Yeah but…well this is OT; but the MXO does have a significant lag time too. Not 1 second, but about five frames which is why I only use it for review and correction. I edit with Digital Cinema Desktop as its got the lowest lag time of any setup I’ve tested.

Just get a second monitor for your system and select “Digital Cinema” as your preview type

Lu, I have not noticed any lag time with the MXO. None. You need to go into the SYSTEM SETTINGS, Playback Control tab and set the FRAME OFFSET to 0. The default is 4…and that makes playback to external monitors off sync.

And to add to this, it’s the same with any video card or playback device. Unless otherwise stated, playback offset always has to be reset to 0 to ensure your playback is in sync. This is the same with the AJA Kona boards and Io devices.

    Wow. For real?

Maybe we’re talking about slightly different things: I think with the playback offset you may be able to have the Canvas and the MXO in sync; but what I meant with the MXO is that it’s the shuttle delay I can’t stand. It doesn’t stop when I want to stop/start/change directions as fast as Digital Cinema Mode does.

Is it that way in your set up? If not, then there’s something really wrong over here.
