  • Using YCbCr in Studio2?

Hello, I’m new to the forum.

I’m planning a project where I will be using black and white PAL video and adding colour in the form of Tiffs and colour channels from other video sources. I need to output in 10-bit 4:2:2 SD PAL.

I keep reading that FCP uses a YCbCr colour space, and I’m guessing that with a B/W video the Y channel will be occupied and the Cb Cr channels empty (similar to LAB mode in Photoshop?). How can I view and manipulate these channels in FCPS2? When I go View>Channels I just get RGB or alpha options. Why is this?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

That’s just the way they describe manipulating the channels, in red, green and blue. I might suggest that you use a plug in like Colorista or Color Finesse. It will give you more control.

You are right. In any B&W picture Cr=Cb=0. You get only values in Y.
But think also that in any B&W picture> R=G=B
There are no few filters to manipulate RGB and also you have a “YUV Adjust” filter in “Image Control”.
But if you want really control to manipulate each channel you better use AE or Shake. They lets you change color space and apply any change, filter or whatever to each channel.

..and always a big mess on top of the table.

Thanks guys for taking the time to reply.

It sounds like I need to investigate Shake or AE then if I want to combine luma and chroma channels from different sources.
