DVCPro HD to Blu Ray question
Hi All.
I have a project in Final Cut that I need to get to Blu Ray DVD.
It’s shot and edited 59.94 progressive. Editing went fine. Since we are running Encore on a PC and can’t use the DVCPro HD codec, I converted it to Animation codec (it’s only 3-1/2 minutes long) at the same size and at the same frame rate. I made a Quicktime movie to import into Encore. The problem is that the Quicktime movie is showing 9frames per second in the properties panel and the resulting Blu Ray dvd is jerky looking. Why would the Quicktime movie be showing a frame rate of 9fps? It plays fine in Quicktime viewer and looks good there. All frames seem to be present if I step through the movie frame by frame. It appears that Encore is picking up in the Quicktime frame rate embedded in the movie properties and using that rate to encode the DVD.
It’s my first attempt at burning a Blu Ray disc and of course it’s under a deadline.
Anyone have any ideas on what might be going on here?

Try the Photo-JPEG codec at 75% to transfer.

Make your MPEG-2 files in Compressor first, then take those to Encore.

You’ll have to test that. In all our BluRay we’ve used MPEG-2 because H.264 was not working correctly in Encore. There are new updates out now and we haven’t gone back to test H.264 yet. In our testing though, they were very similar in quality.

Thanks for the info Walter. I’m still far away from the Blueray authoring (got a burner for archiving) but some time will arrive.

In our experience with Blu-Ray, H.264 was superior at the same data-rate if the source was higher quality than HDV. When coming from HDV using the native MPEG-2 looked better. Obviously MPEG-2 and H.264 suffer from cascading, which is not the case with ProRes, BTW.

Have you tried yet the EX-1? Do DVDSTP or Encore accept the .mp4 from this camera?

We’ve got our EX-1 just a few days ago.
Since native MPEG-2 from the FX-1 is accepted, I think at least the 25 mbps mode should be accepted here as well. I’ll try the HQ mode in the next few days.
BTW, this is still MPEG-2, not MP4.

You’re right. Curious MPG2. In the SxS card are .MP4 and after transfering are .mov.

Hi again.
Just an update to the original question at the top.
I sent my project thru Compressor with not good results. After that (with a deadline looming) I exported as a photojpeg sequence at 59.94. That worked. Encore took it in without any problems and encoded it. Quite slow but it worked. We managed to get a pretty good Blu Ray DVD out of the machine this morning that will actually play on a consumer-lever Blu Ray deck.Actually we tested it on a Play Station as well and it looked good. I fed it to my Panasonic Flat HD monitor along side the Dell 24inch monitor on the Mac. The picture Panny looked very good.
I will continue to refine the process and find proper work flows rather than the work arounds we just used and keep an eye on further updates & bug fixes on Encore. I plan on taking a closer look at thy the mpeg2 files were problematic in Encore as well. At any rate, the first Blu Ray done and the learning curve has flattened a bit.
Maybe some day Apple will add Blu Ray support to DVDSP?
