  • Export log markers to a text file

Posted by Nathan Rittenhouse on February 21, 2008 at 6:18 pm

I am working with some interview footage that I have marked-up extensively at the clip level (i.e. not in a sequence yet) using generic comment markers (not compression or chapter) to help me find my way back through the dialogue for editing. The clips with the markers are multiclips (not sure if that makes a difference.)

I need to get these markers (marker name, comments and time code) into a legible text file. The closest I’ve gotten is an XML export of the multiclip which I opened in a text editor and found my markers listed amidst a ton of extra text stuff, but with un-decipherable time code notations.

If this is an impossible or unduly complicated task and you have found a different process for logging information and sending it to a producer or client I’d love to hear.

    Thanks,

    Nate

The software design in FCP dictates you put this information in the myriad text enterable columns in the Browser. These columns can be exported to a tab delimited file that opens real keen in excel or numbers.

Course, that doesn’t help you now. I’m impressed you found them that way. Bravo. I’m betting you can’t access this any other place without really hacking into the code.. wouldn’t wanna do that myself..

Figure cut and paste? But do it into FCP columns as you do this… ? then export the colums you need. I’m with you though, this is a feature waiting to happen. log over picture is nice for sure.

i.e. never needed to do this, nor in all my readings of posts (there’s a few too) I’ve never heard of someone needing o do this. Get thee to an intern. sorry man.

That did what I needed it to do – Thanks Andreas. I collapsed my multiclips, put them in a sequence, xmled them to your readXML and printed them to a PDF file.

    Thanks again,

    Nate

You’re a genius. Your “readXML” works beautifully! I selected the marked sequence in FCP, exported to XML. I set your app to “Marker sequence + video” and clicked ‘Load XML” and selected ‘sequence’ in the exported file. All the markers and TC’s appeared as promised, matching the FCP columns. I then hit “Export all Markers”. Here’s the kicker: I opened an excel worksheet, hit “paste” and voila. Pure genius. Thank you. Donation in progress.

Thank you Stavros for instructing us on how to use it for exporting markers. This app is so incredibly helpful when you need to produce a rundown list of all lower 3rds, chapter titles, and animation notes for graphic designers to work from.

    Cha’ching.

I followed Stavros’s directions several times but I keep coming upon one of the following:

a pop-up window titled “Select XML node” that indicates there is more than 1 XML and that I should choose one from the list, but nothing shows up on the list! or

it says “checking XML” and does nothing.

Can someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong?

    Thanks

    Lucia

I am having the same problem as Lucia and would love a resolution. Along a similar line, I was trying to find a way to import multiple clips into ReadXML simultaneously and get a batch file out, but it freezes up – is this possible in some way?

    Hi,

    readXML only works on 10.4.11.
unfortunately I lost the source code when “some people cleaned up my office”.

But there is the markerTool on my website, which is not that complexas readXML had been – and it’s only for markers.
