Apple is out of NAB as well. It’s going to be a ghost town.

February 7, 2008 at 8:06 pmInteresting. I wonder why? I mean, I bet they save time and money by not going, but I ould think the chance to have face time in front of people who might not normally even consider Apple balances that out.
Besides, this was going to be the year I went! 🙁

February 7, 2008 at 8:59 pmHoly cow.
I really despise how they say Apple users can go to retail stores or Apple.com to learn about their new products.
We’re not buying ipods and we don’t care about iLife 8.17. We’re trying to make careers with your pro software. Your retail store employees don’t know 1/100 of what I would ask them to show me. So Apple, please find a way to keep us pros WELL INFORMED of FCP. Somehow!

February 7, 2008 at 9:00 pmYou can still go. Apple will be at the SuperMeet April 16 and if it is face to face time you want then the folks whom you REALLY want to talk to, will be there.

Four good reason…
1. Economic reccession/depression looming
2. Apple has little or nothing new to show at NAB.
3. The number of FCP users was over 800K last year and has probably gone way up since then. Apple has probably concluded that the market is reaching saturation.
4. That wedding guy Conner who made such a big splash here a week or so ago has convinced every potential new user that Premiere is as good as it gets.

February 7, 2008 at 9:27 pmI’m pretty surprised, but then they very likely know what they are doing… Hey, it’s not as if we can’t get most of the information we need right here at the COW, right?
Make no mistake I don’t believe this foretells bad things about the Studio’s future in any way, shape, or form. I don’t believe that they have to go when the direct competition has pulled out. Sort of seemed to me though, it would put Apple front and center in the minds of pro users. Just sort of seems like that anyway to me.

February 7, 2008 at 10:38 pmAs much as Apple stock has tanked this past month and how they have cut sale projections, there trying to cut as much cost as possible and it’s unlikely that they will be coming out with anything new, which means FC Server will be out before April. I am planning on going and was hoping for something new this year, hopefully I won’t be lured over to the dark side (Avid).

February 7, 2008 at 10:48 pmLured? they won’t be there either, and they’ve not announced anything special, nor have they lowered the price tag…

February 7, 2008 at 11:30 pmFunny how everyone here announced the death of Avid when they announced they weren’t going, yet when Apple announces it, it’s because “Oh, well I guess they just wanted to save some money…”
It all sounds like those apple loyalists out there that act like Apple can never do any wrong. Now I’m not saying that anyone here is acting like this is a good thing, but this is nothing like when Avid announced the EXACT SAME THING. When that happened, there was a hundred post thread going on about how stupid Avid was and that they were just about finished. So why is it now that Apple announces it, nobody here makes it out to be a fraction of a problem of when Avid announced it?
Sorry, but even the few posts I see here just seem so hypocritical to me…

February 7, 2008 at 11:47 pmThe difference between the two is huge. Avid is in one business only: post production, primarily for broadcast. That’s what NAB is about. This is their show.
Apple is, as a number of people have pointed out, a consumer electronics company. It isn’t even a computer company any more. Pro apps is a very small part of its business. I just don’t think in tight times that they feel they have to compete n this market. They’ve won what they wanted, and they can market in other ways. If they have nothing to show they don’t need to be there.
Furthermore, they’re having a tough enough time selling their existing product upgrades, and if there is no major development there’s no point in spending the millions it takes to put on their show at NAB. Currently, based on a poll on LAFCPUG, about half the users are working with the FCS2 version of the software. Half are working with FCP5 or older versions and are not upgrading at the moment.
Just to add, you could well be right. Apple could easily divest itself of its pro apps. It could easily sell them off to Adobe or some other company.
All the best,
Tom
