  • Export FLV using Final Cut Pro

Posted by Jeff Heck on January 29, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Hi, I did a search, but really didn’t find my answer.

Here’s what I want to do. I have FCP version 5.0.4 (have the new studio 2 but haven’t upgraded yet, one last project to finish).

Can anyone tell me what would be a good setting to export clips to the web using Quick Time Conversion within FCP to flash? What are suggested settings for Flash using advanced settings.

    Thanks for any help.

Export a self contained reference .mov. Buy yourself a copy of Episode or Sorensen squeeze. Import the ref .mov and choose/tweak your favorite flash preset.

As far as flash direct from FCP time line with QT Conversion,, doesn’t happen.

if you have Macromedia Flash 8, it will install an FLV video exporter into Final Cut’s Quicktime Conversion menu. so yes it can happen. but its expensive, so might not be an option for you.

you can also use Visual Hub ($22). its a great cheap swiss army knife and compliments Compressor well. export a self-contained (not reference movie) quicktime at current settings, drop it into Visual Hub. check the “Raw .flv Format” if you need a .flv extension. leave it unchecked if you need .swf extension. then tweak the FLV settings, and you’re good to go. make sure you tweak the settings or else it will export at the same res your source clip is.

I’m completely blown away at the high quality of
    on2 flix pro .flv files.

Way better looking/sounding and smaller file sizes to boot than the macromedia encoder does.

i should have also mentioned that Visual Hub isnt the best looking encoder. you get $22 worth. Chris makes a valid point with on2. it looks really good.

Thanks to all. Excellent advice. I think I’ll go the on2 route.

    Thanks again. Great forum.

I stand corrected! Would be a nice feature to have. Already having a Sorrenson 4.5 license I unfortunately will be without that function for a while.

so, it looks like the options are:

    on2 flix (pro?) for $249,
    flix studio for $430,

    or

Sorensen 4.5 compression suite for $250.

any preferences between the two? any other cheaper alternatives to go from FCP to a flash (FLV) file?

    thanks again!

well, then a web guy sent me the link to get the Riva FLV Encoder…but for some reason it didn’t like my FCP-created QT file…

i guess you do get what you pay for, eh?

    thanks again!
