Making a crapier camera look better
Posted by Ian Liuzzi-fedun on January 12, 2008 at 10:25 pmDoes anyone know of a filter(s) or adjustment method to make a crappier camera seem a little more like the other (better) ones used on a multicamera shoot.

January 12, 2008 at 10:33 pmDont expect miracles…but use the FCP 3 way color corrector to get the cameras to match as closely as you can (especially the white balance). Consult FCP Help manual for more info on how to match the cameras.
There’s no magic filter to make a crappy DV camera look like a pro camera, but if the colors match its a lot less distracting.

In addition to what John suggests with the 3-Way, you can also take it into Color and reduce the noise in the blue channel. This can help reduce noise in the image.
But nothing you do will ever get it to “match” the pro cameras. If it’s a completely different shot, take it to black and white and add grain. Call it a “look.”

January 13, 2008 at 12:08 amSometimes when confronted with completely awful DV footage, I’ll drop to black and white and bump the contrast up. It’s not the best result but sometimes can make a shot usable as an ‘effecty’ shot.
Hopefully you’re not working with HDV. It tends to fall apart with much correction, much like toilet paper when it gets wet.

January 13, 2008 at 5:46 amThat is about the best analogy of the HDV format I have ever heard. And so close to the obvious metaphor.

January 13, 2008 at 11:03 amGraeme Natress’ excellent Chroma Smoother filter can be very effective if you’re integrating DV – it does smooth the image well. I find it’s often DVs handling of colour that gives the game away. Combine this with the 3-way CC and you may find it is a bit more acceptable, IMHO…

January 20, 2008 at 8:19 pmMaybe I could make the other cameras look worse. What would you suggest then?
