  • MPEG-2 Program Streams

    Dear Cow,

I did a brief internet search, did a brief Cow search, found some info… BUT: How does one generate an MPEG-2 file in which the audio is embedded in the video (ie one single file contains both video and audio) but is a Program stream and not a Transport stream? Maybe this is really a Compressor question, not sure… when you export from FCP using Compressor, and you go into the Inspector settings, there is a button in the Extras setting that you can select that turns the extension from an m2v to an m2t – and the audio is embedded. Apparently, this file is not the correct kind I’m supposed to be sending someone in Australia via their upload site. She keeps saying, “No, we want an MPEG-2 !” ANd she forwarded some tech. specs. in which they request an MPEG-2 Program stream. I read online that there is a file type with the extension m2p, which apparently IS an MPEG2 Program stream.

Anyone know how I might export from FCP and make this file type? Can Compressor do it? OR do I need a different piece of 3rd party software to do it?

    Thanks in advance.

    -Sam

Does the term “muxed” come up anywhere in those documents? Try searching for MUXED, it is short for muliplexed, a way of embedding the audio into the file. Compressor does not do muxed files AFAIK.

You can post on the Compressor forum, too, and at apple.com’s discussion forums, although, frankly, the traffic on those sites is dismal. Please indicate you are crossposting the same question to other sites.

I kind of skipped those other 2 forums because I find them under attended, as well.

MUXING — right. Unfortunately, the docs. I received said nothing about it. however, it seems fairly evident that that’s what they want. Taking the Transport Stream I exported from Compressor (the .m2t) and opening it in MPEG-Streamclip seems to be the answer — I am able to take the transport stream and “convert to MPEG with MP2 audio”, which creates a single file that has the Quicktime icon, and .mpeg as the extension. That file that is created opens in Quicktime, and the movie Inspector says it’s “MPEG2 Muxed,” even though it’s “kind” (in the preview column of the finder) decribes it as an “MPEG-1 Movie.”

Thanks for your help. Hope this might help others.

COmpresor 2.0.1 and compressor 3 does this.

In teh encoder button click the ‘extras’ tab. You will notce a tick box that says Multiplexed MPEG-1 layer 2 audio. You can then choose program or transport stream.

    Hi Sam,
    Jeremy points the way.
However, why do you need an MPG2 with muxed audio?
The audio that you get with this format is MPG1-layer 2. Is quite old format and in Compressor you have only one data-rate available: 384Kbps. AAC will yield the same quality with much smaller files.

    Thank you Jeremy and Rafalos.

Unfortunately, I’m running a version of Compressor that calls itself 2.3 When you go into the Extras tab in the encoder section of the Inspector, as you suggest Jeremy, my version has that tick box as well — and it describes itself the same way (Multiplexed MPEG-1 layer 2 audio) — but the fine print says “Select this to create an MPEG-2 Transport stream with multiplexed audio.” When you check it, it does not give you the option of choosing either a transport stream or a program stream. If you continue to keep it as an MPEG-2 in the file format pull-down menu, it automatically makes the extension .m2t And that’s it. I was looking at the Apple site’s description of Compressor 3 that comes standard with Studio2 — it says you have the option of exporting MPEG-2 Elementary, Program, or Transport streams. Time to get work to upgrade, I guess.

Rafalos, a competition in Australia requested the files as muxed MPEG-2 s. Well, actually, they neglected to mention the muxed part, and I thought they were going to be making their own DVDs with the files and delivered .m2v’s and .ac3’s. Then they told me they wanted single files with embedded sound. That’s when I delivered the files as transport streams (.m2t’s), because I saw that my version of compressor made that kind of muxed file, so I assumed that’s what they wanted. Then they said, no, no, this file has the wrong extension. So that’s when I had to “hit the books” and figure out all this stuff about program streams and transport streams. I do not know why they want the files this way. It does seem very archaic to me. I’ve been wondering — is this format more common in Europe/Asia/Australia? Was it a standard many people used to use? Why they don’t want a nice big H.264, I can’t understand.

    Again, thanks for everybody’s help.

    Cool, thanks for that, JG.

Wouldn’t it be cool if all of these formats and all of these manufacturers used the same terminology?

    Hi Sam,
You can get your TRANSPORT STREAM with MPGStreamclip. Just convert your .mov in MPG2 with MPG2 audio. You should get a .mpg.
I asked you about the format because this is the crappiest audio option for a DVD. MPG-1 layer 2 is like the grand father of MP3. However now Compressor allows to rise the data rate to 380Kbps. Before the standard was 224Kbps.
As you say choosing between transport and Program stream is a new option in Compressor.
If I wouldn’t have Compressor 3 neither MPGStreamclip, I just would change the extension (mpg instead of .mt2) and i bet that nobody would notice nothing.

    Samuel

Do what Rafalaos says and use Mpeg Streamclip (It’s the best and most practical free software for video ever) and sorry about the program stream mistake. I was sure that was in FCS1 as well.
