  • HELP my RAID went away all of the sudden!!!!!

Posted by Delano Bryant on November 13, 2007 at 7:19 pm

My RAID isn’t seen by the system. and I get an error saying disk I inserted needs to be initilized. In Disk utility I have for Raid name a bunch of weird charectors. Does anyone know how to save the info on the DISKS? IT’s a SATA Raid with one internal and one external drives

Is that the color red you want to use?

What do you mean one internal / one external drive? You RAIDed to unlike units together? Not recommended.

I do recommend you purchase and download Disk Warrior to see if it can repair your RAID and then you can copy the material off your array.

It’s possibly that one disk is bad – Walter was right – this is a bad setup for a raid.

If both disks aren’t operating (and operating well) neither will show up. You might want to check to see if Disk utility sees both (or only one.)

I’ve never heard of anything like that. Raiding together internal and external drives are definitely not recommended.

    What array is this?

Disk Ut and Disk Warrior both see the drives but not together as a raid. One of the drives have a messed up name. and Disk Warrior says they are both working normally.

Is it setup as raid zero? (both are combined in a single volume for speed)

if so, you probably lost everything.

the single reason I NEVER use raid zero unless I have the contents backed up elsewhere.

Diskwarrior is a necessary investment though.

Back it up immediately, then reformat the RAID.
