Just read in library that we should not Journal our HDD.
Posted by Delano Bryant on November 12, 2007 at 9:47 pmBUT, my RAID is extended (Journaled). Which should it be?
Is that the color red you want to use?

November 12, 2007 at 9:58 pmTurn journaling off for any media drives. Journaling will, with varying degrees, interfere with the capture and editing process.

Media arrays should NEVER be journaled. This has been repeated on this very forum dozens if not hundreds of times over the years.

Just go through the same process again but choose “journaling off” this time. You won’t hurt anything by reformatting.

November 12, 2007 at 11:29 pmSorry guys, I have to play devil’s advocate here. Sonnet recommends journaling the D800RAID. Why? It helps to have a journal when reconstructing the RAID.
Huge Systems also recommended it:

What kind of RAID do you have, HDFIlmmaker?
Also, I prefer PANTONE 179

Just to be absolutely clear, Don did not mean to imply that reformatting would not erase all files from your raid array, because it will…

November 13, 2007 at 1:32 amYou may wish to review the following article:

In particular, look at the end of the article for instructions about disabling journaling.
However, I do believe Jeremy provides enough support for an alternative view to what Walter seems to state as undisputed fact. Of course, maybe Walter and others have done sufficient testing to support their contention that “Media arrays should NEVER be journaled.” It is possible that they have generated test results to counter the tests and recommendations made by the FCP engineers as mentioned in the (old) 2004 post.

You’re quite right, David. I should have been more specific. Never assume that because someone is formatting a RAID that there’s no media on it.
