Where are Subclips stored?
Can someone please tell me how FCP names the files that it creates when making subclips and where the heck it stores them? That would be a big help to me just now.

It doesn’t.
Sub-clips are just that… sub-clips of master clips. FCP can only point to master clips when referring to Quicktime files and sub-clips point to master clips. That’s it.

As Wayne said…there is no new media created. Just a clip that points to a section of the larger media file. FCP stores them in the Browser.

That’s what I thought, but… For some reason an XML file that I created can link all subclips to files on my system, but it can’t seem to link them to the same files on the client’s system. Any ideas why not? This is necessary because the client has an earlier version of FCP.
BTW, the XML file seems to read in perfectly, but all the clips are showing as offline.

Oooo…another reason to hate subclipping in FCP.
Darn it…why can’t they get this fixed? Is it really that difficult?

So Shane, is this something that positively, definitely won’t work no mater what I do? The client has FCP ver 4.5 and it reads the XML and creates a timeline, but so far that’s all. The metadata seems to have no idea what its supposed to link to.
I guess I can try an EDL next??? Its a very simple timeline with simple straight cuts…

I don’t know if it won’t work no matter what you do. Someone might have experience with this and offer a suggestion. I haven’t done this (well, I have done an XML, but I never subclip in FCP) so I don’t know what to day.

Hi Tom,
I exported as XML version 1 primarily because Jeremy G. suggested it. It seemed to work, but alas did not. I finally gave up because I had to relink each clip manually. I had 197 clips…

Wow. That is horrible. I’ve only subcliped a couple of times on smaller projects, but I’m so glad I saw this before I made the mistake of doing any subclips on this doc I’m working on. I knew subclipping in FCP wasn’t as reliable as subclipping in Avid, but this is just ridiculous. In an online/offline workflow subclipping is more of a deathtrap than a feature…

There may be other issues involved in this besides the material being subclipped. I ran some pretty extensive tests on multiple machines and couldn’t make it do what happened to David. I did use XML v1, but I was not using different versions of the application.
