external video playback with ProRes on 2nd monitor? Is it possible? I tried it on a MBPro. Doesn’t work (not suprising) .. but how about on a quad-core Mac Pro with GeForce 7300? any ideas?

Why not? I use my MBP with an e-SATA card and a small two drive array and it plays ProRes in 1280×720 just fine.
When I connect a Matrox MXO I can even record via HD-SDI to a professional machine.

Something else must be wrong with your setup.

It’ll work with Digital CInema Preview…otherwise you need a capture card to view it. You cannot view it via firewire like you can DV.

Thank you for your messages but let’s review this situation and see what you think. It’s a MBPro 1.83ghz (radeon 1600 w/128mb). And I run all my FCP footage from/to eSATA 3gbit/s. Connected to my MBPro is a Westinghouse 1440×900 via DVI.

I am not trying to go through firewire. I cannot get external video preview past a single frame using DVI. It just doesn’t play. I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve been using FCP since version one and I am pretty good with it, just can’t figure this out so I was guessing it needed a better graphics card to preview ProRes.

Oh let me mention again: I am not trying to get a preview on the MBPro screen. I am trying to get it on the external monitor so I can edit w/preview.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

This is from a thread from DVinfo who had a similar problem. I tried his solution. Didn’t work… any ideas to rescue me from this bizarre problem would be appreciated.

Strange! While mine is a 2.33 GHz Intel 2 Core Duo, that shouldn’t make such a difference. My graphics card is the X1600 as well, albeit with 256 MB. Again this shouldn’t stop you from playing it. Do I understand you well, you get an image on the external screen, but it doesn’t play, right?

One thing, though: You mention the throughput of your e-SATA. Those 3 gbit/s are only the theoretical speed of the connection. The actual speed depends on your drive and a single drive won’t cut it. I use a two-drive RAID-0 through e-SATA.

Uli, thanks for trying to figure this out..

Yes, exactly, I get an image but it won’t play. (Also just realized I have the same problem even with DV!!!) Very strange. I’ve been using FCP for 7 years and never had this problem before. I mean even with a G4 Powerbook, I had no problems with this..

As for the drive, I have a SATA drive in a eSATA enclosure and have been editing HDV 24p with it for a while, have had no problems so far but definitely going to RAID soon.

And as I am having the same problem with every codec, I am pretty sure it’s not a drive speed or graphics card problem (even tried it with OfflineRT PJpeg)

Bizarre, bizarre! I am offering a free virtual beer to whoever can figure this out! 🙂

    Thanks guys.

First thing to try: FCP Rescue (Anders Holck). It’s trashing the prefs.

This is too basic to post, especially for an experienced FCP editor, but…

Have you tried command-F12? If Single Frames is selected in View/External Video what you describe is exactly what you would see.

So still don’t know what caused it but Final Cut Rescue solved the problem.

    Thanks guys..
