23.976 targas
Posted by Lance Bachelder on July 6, 2007 at 5:47 amWhen I convert image sequences on a G5 via QT Pro or AE 6.5 to bring into FCP I lose the last frame of evey shot. If I render them on a XP machine in AE7 I can bring them into FCP no prob – no lost frames. Anyone have this problem?
We are doing a CGI series and all our final shot come as targas – I am finishing the show using Pro RES HQ but can’t solve the lost frame thingy.

Why convert them to QT before bringing them into FCP?
Import the targa sequences into FCP directly and render. If you’re not certain how to do that look in help or write back and I’ll help you.

July 7, 2007 at 3:43 pmFCP doesn’t support image sequences like other NLE’s – you must set your still image length to 1 frame and import the images that way This is fine for a seq here or there – but I’m talking dozens of targa seq. delivered all at once. (we are doing a CG series) Vegas, Premiere Pro, Avid all work fine on the PC, but we want to finish epsodes in FCP!
I am uisng After Effects to batch them into QT’s. AE7 on the PC works fine – I only have AE 6.5 on OSX and it loses the last frame on every shot as does QT Pro! Compressor doesn’t do image sequences either (only export). Anyone tried AE7 for this on the Mac?

Sure, there are a few limitations of working with TGA seqs. on thge timeline in FCP, however it would be simple for you to import each of your still seqs., put them on a timeline, and export each as a seperate QT.

July 8, 2007 at 5:14 pmThanks Gary – Gluetools looks great but seems more suited for DPX work like DI’s etc. Doesn’t say anything about targas or image sequences en masse.
Looking of the right tool to batch convert a lot of image sequences into ProRES clips.

you do understand the DPX workflow is exactly the same as what you are doing, albeit at a different level.
Feature films use HUGE amounts of DPX stills in sequence form.
200K – 300K images are normal in a workflow and even Millions of frames are common.gary adcock

July 9, 2007 at 2:26 pmOur show is being delvered at 1280×720 24 fps targas. I batch convert the targas into clips via AE at 23.976. We are currently using Cineform NEO 2K codec which creates a pristine clip that is a fraction of the size of UNC. We have also tested ProRES HQ and like it. We cannot keep the shows in frames or uncompressed clips because of the systems demands – raids, starage capacity, SAN, lack of fiber etc.
I was just looking for a solution to create the QT’s on the Mac so we can use the Pro RES HQ codec and finish in FCP/Color. Both AE 6.5 and Quicktime Pro lose the last frame of every clip when I convert from frames. This is not a problem on the PC using AE 7.
Thanks!

July 12, 2007 at 6:25 amI know its kinda dumb, but why not just duplicate the last frame in the sequence (and give it the next sequential number), knowing it will get cut off anyway. This should get your last frame in.
BTW, I have recently made QT’s from image sequences (AE7 Mac and QT 7.1.6) and did not see this problem.

December 11, 2007 at 2:54 amDavid or anyone else,
I am trying to import a targa sequence and I’ve gone to “help” where I have found very little help. So, if you can educate me on the art of importing, rendering and exporting into FCP I would be very appreciative.
Thanks,
