Hi, how would I do a simple write on effect (without using a mask)? I want it to look like cursive writing on…Thanks…

Not really. You can try a sinple linear wipe or combinations of multiple instances of said effect, but it’s not going to look too convincing. Some things simply cannot be had easily.

you could use vector paint to keyframe in a stroke over your text. then set the composite paint setting to ‘as matte.’ it takes time, but you can get good results.

thanks, when you say linear wipe, is there an effect/plug in for that? or do you mean a wipe with a mask? Thanks…

Masking or write-on with the paint effects. Easy but tedious.
The critical thing with cursive is knowing form the start that crosses, dots, bars and any overlaps must be separate layers, separate paints, or separate masks.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

The cleanest way is to use Photoshop, type your logo with your favorite font, break it down into layers, then import the PSD with its layers into After Effects. Use the write-on effect to reveal each layer. It takes a little time but is really clean.

You’ll get the idea if you watch Jayse’s (excellent) video on making elements grow.
