  • FCP 5.1.4 new Render Engine???

Does FCP 5.1.4 have a new render engine or is it just QT 7.1.5.

I am Just putting the polish on a project started last November in FCP 4.5 that is edited on a Targa uncompressed timeline and consists of DVcam, DV and lots of moving/scaled 300 DPI Nikon camera shots. The visible difference between the FCP 4.5 render of the scaled/moving 300 DPI camera stills and the FCP 5.1.4 render of the same sequence is noticable. It is like all at once there is this great glossy look…. Or is it, I have been staring at it to long… 🙂

I think I read that some of Motion render code was put in FCP 5.1.4,, maybe..

What ever it is,, Thanks Apple…

FCP 5 has a new render engine. Almost 2 years ago now. There are 3 levels of motion rendering for a sequence. See the sequence settings.

If you’re running 5.1.4 on an intel machine, there are lots of new filters that render very quickly. They are brought over from Motioin I think. In fact, many of them are touted as new to version 6, which is confusing considering I’ve been using the filters since January when I first used the intel box.

Filters include Glow and Light Rays effects.

Apple added support for their new(er) FX Plug plug-in architecture in 5.1.2. FX Plug is hardware accelerated, so you should be able to do more real-time effects w/o rendering. This isn’t exclusive to Intel machines, but it does mean that your graphics horsepower (or lack thereof) becomes a variable in FCP’s performance like it has always been with Motion.

You’ll notice that the fx I mentioned don’t show up in the G5 versions of 5.1.2 or greater. Just on the intels. Don’t know why.

Becaue those G5’s don’t have a graphics card that will support Motion’s FX Plug architecture. Motion is totally GPU dependent, FCP uses the CPU. So Motion requries a higher end graphics card than FCP does.

I’ve just had three consulting clients upgrade graphics cards on G5 Macs, and now the FX Plug plugins show up on them.

It is not an Intel thing, it’s a graphics card thing.

I’d also NEVER upgrade FCP versions in mid-project. You’re only looking to create some major potential headaches and disasters.
