pulldown for 720p 23.98 shot on varicam
Hey –
I am Assisting on a show that is shot on Varicam and cut DVCPRO HD 720P 23.98 in Final Cut Pro. We are capturing from and outputting to the Panasonic AJ-1200HD deck.
Another default in the 720p easy setup is a 2:3:2:3 pulldown in the System settings. Should I change that setting to Advanced Pulldown (2:3:3:2)?
I also hear the 1200 deck has some issues recording the flags for 23.98.
Also, I have been told that the frame blending mode in Final Cut needs to be unchecked as it causes interlacing issues not suitable for broadcast. (The default is checked.)
Any other advice would be appreciated.
Gary Adcock has said the default 2:3:2:3 is correct because advanced pulldown should only be used in interlaced modes.

Should I change that setting to Advanced Pulldown (2:3:3:2)?”I don’t see ADVANCED PULLDOWN being an option for DVCPRO HD. That is a setting for DV. No, just choose the DVCPRO HD 720p24 setting and FCP will do the rest. The varicam inserts flags onto the tape that indicate what format the footage is. So if it is 23.98, FCP will capture it 23.98. If it is 59.94, FCP will capture it 59.94…no matter what easy setup you choose. This is why I have to log and capture…my DP constantly switches so that I can have footage to slow-mo later.

Frame blending should be unchecked…correct. But, if the footage is 24p, then there are no frames to blend…

About Pulldown…
Cadence is referring to the redundant or duplicate frames/ fields that are added so that 24p (23.98) content will playback properly in the 60i world broadcast lives in. However with variable frame rates that cadence can change based on the frame rate being shot and the video stream the content is being recorded in. This is called a “telecine”

The reason I ask is that since there obviously will be a pulldown when I go out to tape and I have the option of making it advanced (in the system settings – playback tab) or normal, I want to make sure I am not forcing fields to blend by choosing normal which is the default for 720P DVCPRO HD. We want to stay 23.98 the whole way through. The D5 master will be 23.98, so I just want to make sure I’m not messing with the flow.

This is the first mention of D5 – your first sentence in the first post said you were capturing from and recording to a 1200a.
