All I want for NAB 2007
Posted by Nate on December 23, 2006 at 5:38 pmIn the spirit of the season, I decided to start the NAB “I want Please”… Just recently my G4 dual-Cinewave RT took a dive. The good guys here reomended Kona 3 and IO or the smaller analog-digital box transcoders… total dollars to get back and running $9,500 using old monitors and Medea array.
So I took 4 days to see if I could get the old beast running at least until NAB 2007, maybe Junes winter crop of Apples..
So all I want for Xmas is an Apple Mac Pro Intel Octo Core, terrabyte internal Sata raid, 4 gigs ram,Kona 3-/-Kona IO and a Sony BlueRay HD DVD recorder…. Yes Please… If you can run the Mac Pro under Windows, why not burn HD DVDs… I have read that Sony Vegas will burn HD and Roxio has a new HD DVD build/burn software also…..
All I want is real time SD>HD transcode and edit to HD DVD delivery,,, Please Santa Please…..

December 23, 2006 at 5:57 pmI’ll fill in the blanks with 10 favorites then:
1) Mixed codecs/resolutions in the same timeline
2) Background rendering while editing
3) Colorcorrection curves
4) Individual track height
5) Saved project includes setup
6) Used clip indicator in bins
7) Direct import of image sequences
8) Fixed 4/8 pt. garbage mattes
9) Subframe audio editing
10) Integration with Shake that works– No Parking Production –

December 23, 2006 at 6:10 pm4…. it already exists… drag right between the track names… 9 does too… try zooming wayyyy in.. will go to 1/100th of a frame.
I want number 1 too!!!BAD…
Number 3 would be nice, but figure since Apple bought Silcon Color… we’ll be seeing this soon somewhere!
I want an 8 processor Mac and FCP that uses all 8 of them (rendering the background? What’s rendering?! A Kona 3 and a really fast fibre array with a Blu-Ray burner that works directly with DVD SP… please NAB com’on down!

December 23, 2006 at 7:04 pmI want:
1) ability to color video and audio tracks on the timeline
2) better markers. If the marker is linked to a clip, so that it moves when the timeline moves, PLEASE show it on the top of the timeline. Please?
3) create new media with speed changes, please. Helps media manage a cut…A LOT.More as I think of them.

December 23, 2006 at 10:06 pmHere is my wish list:
1. Clips with filters have some type of indication on the timeline
2. Easy way to delete unused rendered media
3. Turn video tracks off and on without losing renders
4. Rendered layers on a timeine shoudl be treated as a single layer so that if you add an additonal layer on top,
FCP should view it as 2 layers in regard to whether it is realtime or not. I work primarirly with uncompressed HD.
I typicaly have to output clean and bugged versions of my shows. When I finish color correcting and rendering a show,
I have to export the show as a quicktime time reference, import it on a new timeline and add the static bug so that I do
do not have to re-render the entire show.George Bellias

December 24, 2006 at 5:39 amOut of a need in me to help you out here:
1. Open the keyframe area, beneath tracks Opt+T. you can see the colored lines that indicate a change with a filter or a motion effect. Control click there to set keyframes. Check it out, you might really like this. The different colors across the top of the Timeline window will let you know if it’s a rendered or non rendered effect, would that help you here?
2. What can be easier than what it does now with renders? It trashes all renders automatically that aren’t contained in a sequence somewhere. Change opacity on a clip and it will disconnect from it’s current render file… it’s pretty easy I think. You can trash renders by sequence in the Render Manager too.
3. Un-enable a clip instead .Control click or right click on the clip sequence to find this command… those track lights also determine which tracks are exported to Quicktime, I want a first gen render always of any tracks that are layered… This is all due to the fact that FCP doesn’t default to performing renders of already rendered layers. That would consitute a digital generation loss. Avid does this… Each render of a render gets softer imho.
4. Just nest the sequence where it sits, and add the bug. type cmd+a, opt+c… ready for bug. I nest finals a lot. to preserve the render. The workflow is different than Avid’s but it’s also always a first generation render.
More horsepower makes all this render thing less painful until we get to doing 4k files as a rule LOL…

December 24, 2006 at 12:29 pmTwo things I would include…
Paste Attributes should include composite modes.
Ability to add markers while capturing.

SD to HD and HD to SD in realtime already exists with the Kona cards and you’ve already got the Kona 3 on your list, so you’re already set there.
As for myself, I want to see Apple fix all the problems with Final Touch HD so my $5,000 investment isn’t just sitting on the shelf much longer. It’s so broken right now we can’t even use it for anything. A fixed Final Touch HD would make my NAB much happier.

December 24, 2006 at 6:07 pmHow about better smooth keyframes on motion moves, like AE ‘Easy Ease’ and clip naming while digitizing.

December 24, 2006 at 10:40 pmHeck, I’d be happy if they’d finally add real-time NTSC/PAL output from DVDSP! I’ve only been asking for like the last 5 Christmases! I swear I’ve been a good boy!

December 26, 2006 at 7:53 amThe way I’m reading the tea leaves is that there wont be a FCP6 Studio until Han 08 at which time it will become the replacement for Final Cut Express. Of course if Apple does not extend the crossgrade offer to FCE users on Jan. 9, then things may play out somewhat differently.
My expectation is that the rumored Final Cut Extreme will appear instead at a professional price of lets say $4995 with a $1000 crossgrade discount for existing FCP users until Dec. 31 2007. After this date it would be a $99 upgrade to FCP Studio 2 (no manuals of course).
