Whenever I bring a clip into the timeline I get that annoying orange bar and the clip drops frames when I playback. I’m new to Macs and FinalCut but I’m sure I should be able to play at least base clips realtime. I’m running Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 on a Quad PowerPC G5 with 4.5 GB of Ram and a 1.8 TB SATA Raid drive. I’m pretty sure I’ve double-checked all of the settings, I’ve given FCP enough ram and the right scratch disks. I’ve got nothing else open and I’ve tried this in an empty project with the defaults applied. I’ve also made sure the sequence settings match the clip settings and I’ve tried the AJA Kona 10bit uncompressed codec and the default FCP 10bit one too and neither will play back realtime. Does anyone out there know what might be wrong with my setup?

Something isn’t right in the clip settings and sequence settings. They must be off in some small way.

Here is a nifty trick to get sequence settings that match your clip settings EXACTLY.

    NON STANDARD FCP CODECS.

    Doubtful,

Nothing is wrong with your setup, you have a great system with all the right hardware. Your problem is simple, your timeline and your media don’t match. More than likely this is the result of the most common trap that gets all beginers when starting with FCP — you probably set your Easy Setup to match your video and then you just dropped some video into the timeline called Seq. 1 that was open in your project and immediately saw he orange bar. That sequence never gets with the proper setup, you must open a new sequence and that one will be setup properly. Its something that Apple should have fixed a long time ago…

Yeah, that terrible Sequence 1. I hate it.
