  • FCP and Flame versions of same material don’t match

I encountered a peplexing situation today. Our editor exported some material from FCP 4.5 as a TGA sequence for use in Flame. The original capture was via a Kona using Uncompressed 422 8-bit from SDI in. To my surprise, the look of the FCP frames did not match the same material recorded into Flame via it’s SDI input. The whites seemed fine but gamma seemed wrong. The difference was more complicated than could be replicated by re-mapping 16 to 0 and 235 to 255 which is often the culprit in this kind of situation. Fearing that FCP could not be trusted to work transparently, I did a test of the complete video loop by capturing from and then editing out to Digital Betacam and, what do you know? It is transparent. So what’s up with the export? Any pearls of wisdom on this would be much appreciated.

yes, we have documented the same problem. we never noticed it until we brought the kona into our discreet workflow. it seems that discreet converts the image from YUV to RGB during digitize without us having a way to recreate that transformation in final cut or even after effects. thus, captured images look different when you mix IO methods. staying with either just flame or just kona for IO seems to work as long as graphics are tuned for the respective environment. initially we thought that fcp/kona were to blame, but further testing indicates the “problem” is with discreet. if they or someone can create a LUT or colorprofile or favorite that exactly mimics the discreet conversion method in fcp or ae, we would be very happy indeed.
