  • Compression markers not cleaning up cross dissolve to black…help!

Hi there, I have completed an edit and output for DVD via Compressor 2.0.1. I am finding that some of the transitions (especially those going to and from a black background) are showing pixelated artifacts. I have applied manual compression markers either side of the transition and even in the middle of the transition, yet I am still getting the pixelated problems. I output this 3 times, each time trying something different in the placement of the compression markers. Is there something I am missing? Thanks, Simon.

Raising the bit rate will help, and using a constant high bit rate is best for programs under 60 minutes. If it’s longer than that, then a VBR is where you need to go probably.

Might also try exporting directly from FCP. i.e. File/Export using Compressor… it does the best job that you can do.

Yes, use the EXPORT > COMPRESSOR selection in the Final Cut menu. That’s the best quality you can get.

And get rid of those compression markers. If you’re exporting right from the timeline the transition is “seen” by compressor and it acts as a compression marker all on its own.

Even if you do need to use compression markers elsewhere, don’t overdo it. By putting 3 markers so close together you’re actually CAUSING more problems for yourself.

A marker tells the program to make that frame full-quality, right? The way MPEG II works, you are getting an average bit-rate over a period of time. So if you are forcing it to give you 3 full-quality frames within a second it has no CHOICE but to lower the quality of the frames in between those markers in order to meet its target average rate.

Markers can be useful, but don’t put too many too close together. And by exporting directly you shouldn’t need any of them on transitions or cuts at all.

I had this problem (pixelated dissolves) with version 2.0 and it seems to be fixed with 2.1 when you upgrade FCP Studio to 5.1.
