Has anyone had performance issues with FCP 5.1 after they loaded FLIP FOR MAC on their computer? I’ve noticed that after I added this program FCP started to hose up. The keyboard wouldn’t allow me to type in FCP and sometimes menus would be grayed out. And it would just hose up from time to time requiring a restart.
Also when I export REF movies FCP doesn’t export Reference movies. I leave Make movie self contained UNCHECKED but FCP exports a self contained movie instead. This is tying up the computer, hampering work flow and causing headaches for boss. He’s ready to switch to media 100 Software. Has anyone had an similar experiences with FCP or have any ideas about what to do to correct this?

Self contained movies always include audio, but if you send a sequence out without rendering EVERYTHING first, it will contain video that was unrendered in the sequence you exported. Reference movies must have rendered effects to reference otherwise they must contain and create these renders including the “full” res status unrendered effects. (like simple titles)

The Filp for Mac thing isn’t normal. I’ve installed it and not seen a loss in stability… I’d suggest you read my article in the COW magazine about maintaining and operating a rock solid FCP system.

Media 100 is on it’s last legs… probably not best to be working with a system with a dead end future. Pretty silly to spend a ton of bucks when a day’s reinstall would most likely fix you right up. Trashed preferences and run disk utilites lately? Repaird permissions lately? Did you reinstall it all when you went to Tiger? If not that’s much more likely the cause of your headaches.

Thanks for your prompt post Jerry. I’ve read your article. It’s very good. I’ve been researching the net now and I’ve found some things I’m going to try that are along with what you’re talking about. I’ll let you know how it work out.

My post should have started with NON self contained movies or Reference Movies…

What if the sequence is rendered and it still takes 20 minutes to export a REF movie for a sequence 5 minutes long? It doesn’t do this all of the time. Also I’ve done tests where I’ll export the same sequence twice. Once as a SELF CONTAINED and once as a REF MOVIE.
When I compare the two sometimes they are the same size. Why is that? It’s almost as though it isn’t exporting a REF movie. It’s as if the box MAKE SELF CONTAINED is checked even though it isn’t checked. Would a reinstall fix this problem? I’ve had FCP 5.04 on my G5 now since February of this year. In your article in Cow magazine you wrote files gets corrupted over time so FCP should be uninstalled and restalled every 6- 9 months.
