  • HDV on a G4 – problems with crashing!

Posted by Jason Porthouse on June 7, 2006 at 4:20 pm

    Hi All,

I’m currently cutting a project in HDV on a dual 1Ghz G4 (quicksilver) with max RAM (1.5gig) using a G-SATA for storage. FCP 5.1 ond OS10.4.6. I’m experiencing random crashes and wondered if anyone can shed light on the problem? There seems to be a mix of crashes and kernel panics running at about 60/40. We’ve pulle dthe original RAM chip out in case it was bad but then get out of memory errors…

Is this just because we’re pushing the machine too far? Anyone else tried HDV on a G4 DP1Ghz?

    Cheers,

    Jason

Are you running with the latest QT revision?

Also, does 5.1 work ok with other formats on your system? That will help determine if FCP is having problems or if it’s limited to that codec.

And there is an FCP 5.1.1 update as well.

    Walter,

Thanks for your prompt response – it’s currently running 5.1 with QT7.04. Would you recommend upgrading?

    Cheers,

    Jason

You can try QT 7.1, but I’m not sure if that will help. I don’t know if G4’s can run HDV well or not.

Does your setup work fine with other codecs? Create a new project and just set up to work in DV and see if FCP works fine. If it does, then try going back to HDV and see if it continues to crash.

I’ll try that, though we’re under the kosh a little with time… but i can see where you’re thinking from…

Just noticed that Safari is crashing out too, so i wonder if the machine is at fault rather than the software.

Ho hum, takes me back to the good old days of Avid (the one with the custom chassis – cut once, save once, cut once, save once…)

    Jason,

Try downloading and running Applejack on your computer. It cures many issues that can show up as kernal or memory errors. Once installed it is run by pressing Command + S at stsytem bootup after the Apple startup tone sounds. Then type applejack – auto – restart and just let Applejack have its way with you computer. It just might repair your issues.

Thanks David. I’ll try that on my G3 running Tiger. It crashes quite a lot even though the G3 is approved.

    Hey Kevin,

Do let me know if it works for you. It has been very good to me. BTW, the Applejack tip came recommended by the MAC guru to my MAC guru — like getting advice from a lawyer’s lawyer.

Thanks David – I tried Applejack but no joy – still crashing. I’m thinking that we’re just asking too much. I chatted to a chap last night who had exactly the same symptoms after going to 10.4 from 10.3.9, which was rock solid on his mirror door G4. He tried everything – re-installs, rebuilds, in the end he bit the bullet and bought a Quad G5. A bit drastic I grant you, but he’s had no problems since….

Jason…. I feel your pain! At my post house, we also have a G4 (now a DVD station) with the same characteristics as yours. I have found that anything above DV50 is completely out of the question, especiallly HDV. HDV is soooo processor intensive that the G4 cannot keep up. If you are going to work in HDV more in the future…. You really need to just bite the bullet and get the best G5 you can afford with the maos t amount of memory you can afford. Sorry, bud.

    David,
I tried it and it seems very thorough. I’ve never run a program in Single User mode
