  • Audio out of sync in Log & Capture

Posted by Lanzi on May 29, 2006 at 10:14 am

    FCP 4.
PD170 connected to G4 via firewire.

During playback in Log & Capture audio (output via connected loudspeakers) is out of sync with video. Sometimes yes sometimes no.

What can I do to keep it stable? Checked all presets, seems to be fine. Problem occurs with any DV tape I log.

    Thank you

What are you using for capture? DV, Camera, etc.? I have the same issue using even firewire to capture. It appears that the final product is OK once inside the edit platform.

Exactly how are you monitoring the audio and video?

If you don’t have your system set up properly, you will certainly have sync issues. The manual has a very good diagram of how external audio and video monitors should be connected and used at all times with FCP.

There are obvious exceptions, like if you’re working remotely and just can’t drag a monitor to the coffee shop…but in general, it’s best to always have external audio and video monitors in use with FCP.

The diagram is in different pages depending on what version of FCP you have, so you may have to search for it. It’s pretty close to the beginning, though!

All my presets have been checked and they are fine. Last time I was editing (2 weeks ago I went off for relaxation and now back) I didn’t have this problem.

I am using PD170 DV camera as a deck connected via Firewire. Lacie monitor connected to G4. Once the clip has been captured there are no sync problems in the Viewer nor on the timeline.

I cannot keep loggin like this. Its driving me nuts!

But are you monitoring audio from the PD170 or the computer? There will always be lag if you watch external monitor for video and use internal monitors for audio or vice versa.

If not already, can you connect your external speakers to the PD170?

If you are already monitoring external audio, can you check the sync form the PD170 using headphones? Is the lag before the camera, at the camera, or after the camera?

Here you go – the diagram. Note that your LaCie is a computer monitor – you want to use a SD monitor in addition to the computer monitor. FCP is more than an app, it’s a system, which include your speakers and video monitor attached to the deck NOT the mac.

Almost every “self-trained” editor does not use external monitoring, I have found. A pity.

Thanks Kevin. But I don’t understand why I NEVER had problems during logging of my tapes in Log and Capture until now. Always watched the footage on the Lacie monitor and listened to the audio from external speakers plugged into the Mac and nothing was out-of-sync.

    Why now?

I woke up this morning and after a strong double Lavazza espresso, I discovered to my amusement that the problem was gone.

I cannot follow Kevin’s correct set-up because I am home-editing and being low-key I am using (horrors of horrors) those little Altec Lansing speakers and my tv exploded, so to speak, weeks ok and I am not going to carry up the 40incher Sony from downstairs – yet. When hiring a studio, yes I would log using the Sony BVM monitors and audio via speakers.

I suspect however, could my problem had to with:
User Preference > General > ‘Sync audio capture to video source if present’

It is selected. Turning it on/off, I hear no difference (bear in mind my system set-up etc)

[Lanzi] “Thanks Kevin. But I don’t understand why I NEVER had problems during logging of my tapes in Log and Capture until now. Always watched the footage on the Lacie monitor and listened to the audio from external speakers plugged into the Mac and nothing was out-of-sync.

You said that sometimes your audio is out of synch while capturing – and sometimes not.
In which situations are you out of synch while capturing?

    a) It has no rhyme or reason
    b) When you listen to audio from the camcorder’s headphones and viewing footage in the Log and Capture window?
    c) When you listen to audio from the speakers connected to the Mac and viewing footage in the Log and Capture window?

Regardless of how you’ve been working in the past, you are not setup correctly now regarding monitoring.
Improper setup causes 90% of all problems and confusion on this board. So the first thing I would do is
setup your system properly for external monitoring. It’s OK if you don’t want to follow my advice. However, I’m just telling you how FCP works best regarding monitoring.

Follow the manual’s instructions and set up your rig as Apple recommends that you do:

    1. Connect your video monitor (or a TV) set and the speakers to your PD-170.
    2. A/V Settings: Set Audio monitoring to DV-NTSC.

Done! Whether you are logging, capturing, editing or laying back – you’ll ALWAYS be in synch on the TV and
    through the attached speakers.

Longer clips captured to slow FireWire drives may also exhibit problems with synch, but if you are
experiencing trouble while only logging – it’s certainly a system setup-operator error thing.

If you still don’t want to take my advice and do not want to monitor externally, all presets EXCEPT audio monitoring should be set to DV-NTSC. Audio is to be set to the built in. In the View menu, also make sure that “Audio Follows Video”.
You should be able to work without a video monitor this way – just know that it’s not a recommended way
to work. You’ll have to constantly check your presets, for sure.

    Good Luck.
