    “no” and what else?
    Relevant.

Are your two installs using the same license?

We do not have the Intel hardware but our 5.1 installs on our G5s open our older projects instatnly.

    5.1 is not backwardly compatable.

one workaround is to use XML export to transfer the project file back to 5.0.4

the simplest solution is upgrade everything to 5.1

    cheers,

Projects created on the G5 in 5.0 are not opening on the Intel in 5.1 which is clearly a problem but it's not a backward compatible issue. But that's just how I read it. You read it differently. Probably neither of us is correct. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    Hello again all

my original question may not have had enough details so I will begin again

In my office I have 2 imacs

    imac1 is a g5 powermac

imac 2 is a dualcore intl mac

both macs have seperate seats of final cut studio running on them

at home I have a G5 dektop and a G4 laptop each of them have a seat of Final cut studio running as well

I created a project at home on the g5 and brought the hard drive with all the material into the office connected that to the intel imac and tried to open the project I recieved a dialog box that stated the project could not be opened

it stands to reason that a few others out there might be in a situation where the own G4 or G5 macs running fcp5x on them and may also have access to the new mac running the universal install as well and perhaps they ran into the same situation

the replys I have seen thus far suggest that fcp5.1 is not backwards compatible with fcp5.0x

thanks again for any help or insight

First of all the PowerMacs are the Mac desktop computers running on G5 PowerPC processors.

From my experience FCP 5.1 will open a project from an earlier version except maybe if you used third party plugins not compatible with 5.1.

You definitly cannot open a 5.1 project in 5.0x.

If you open a 5.0x project in 5.1 it will convert it to a 5.1 project therefore you can’t open it back in 5.0x.

    Suggestion install 5.1 at home.

Nice try but you’re still not making any sense.
The machine has nothing to do with any file interchange situation. All that matters is the version of FCP.

Running FCP 5.1.1 here and opening FCP 5.0 projects just fine on two PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0’s and one Quad. It warns me that the project is an older version and it will update it to FCP 5.1.
