Do I have to have a 16:9 wide screen NTSC monitor to match my 16:9 timeline.
Hello and thanks for responding to my post.
I’ve been working on a project shot anamorphically, I’ve recently purchased a NTSC monitor, a basic TV, and suspect that the monitor has a slightly different picture.
I’m well aware the sides are cut off, but I think perhaps there is a distortion as well resulting in my 16:9 footage looking squeezed.
Does anyone know if my suspecision is correct and perhaps buying a 16:9 monitor is not the answer, but maybe there is an option in FCP 5 that I have not set/checked/unchecked?

hmm….more than likely yo uare looking at your picture squished….
the only thing to “do” is to edit in a 4×3 timeline, so that your footage is letterboxed…..but that may tax your system a bit….and you’ll eventually have to render it out, and your final project will be 4×3 letterboxed instead of 16×9…

Many/most broadcast monitors can be switched between 4×3 and 16×9, one of many reasons to use a true broadcast monitor. Your only solution on a 4×3 TV would be to either crop to 4×3, in which case you won’t see the full frame, or letterbox to see the full frame.

In this case Will you would simply edit your 16×9 material in a 4×3 timeline. Its not perfect, rather another one of those compromises…

Or you can buy a basic TV that does 16:9.
