I was capturing on my fcp4 and I wasn’t able to see the video. My camera was communicating with the program, but no visuals. I checked my preferences, but I couldn’t figure it out. Help!

I run into the same thing sometimes when switching devices. Try command F12 that will refresh AV devices. That works for me.

Save, Shut Down, Restart. If you’re capturing, you may have to recapture some fome of your logged clips if this happened during capture. Sometimes video communication over the FireWire bus freezes (why…no idea). Even disconnecting and reconnecting your DV device won’t necessarily fix the problem.

You should work with your deck or camcorder powered up at all times and connected to a pro video monitor. Your speakers should also be set up out of the deck or camcorder. If you are set up properly, you should always be able to see your image on your monitor.

Preview Disabled usually happens when you are crowding the FireWire bus with daisy chained camcorders and firewire drives. Typically, I need to trash my prefs to bring my Log and Capture window back.

Even so, it’s much better to have my video monitor up and running as I log and capture.

Many, many people do not operate with FCP properly set up with no external gear. When you are not set up right, all kinds of confusion can happen.
