What Production monitor to buy????

Apple 23″ display / Samsung 17″ LCD / Sony 1944Q Production monitor
Blackmagic Decklink Extreme card v4.8b
FCP 4.5 production Suite
1 300gig scratch disc
500GB G-Raid Firewire800
Decks = Beta-SP, DVCpro, DigiBeta.
Audio Mix = Mackie 1604 VLZpro
I believe I have the stock display card
Panasonic AJD-230H DVCpro deckI Am currently using the Sony 1944Q for my NTSC monitor. I am upgrading my FCP4.5 to 5HD w/ tiger. I want a new Hi-Def monitor
for final program and color correction. Any Advice on monitors?

There is also that Panasonic one that is always visible when you read posts…the BT-LH1700W.
But I expext it is mainly a Production monitor for the road, not for Post.

Actually they’re trying to get it into Post facilities too. The demo unit around here is just out all the time so we havne’t been able to put it alongside our PVM 20L5/1 yet, but I’ll let you all know when I do.

It’s not an official broadcast monitor, but if you’re looking for size and full resolution 1920×1080 that can handle 1080p, this one has a great price. I’ve had it for a week now and it’s impressive. It comes in around $1700 after taxes, rebates, etc.
Anyway, it’s a 37in LCD full-res HD monitor with multiple inputs, but the brand (Sceptre) is a little no-name.

Geeze Gary…you have the HVX-200 weeks before it is released…you have two of these monitors…you were one of the workers at the Panasonic booth at the DV Expo…you have a Kona 2 and Kona LH…
You get all the toys.
For my show we will be outputting at a post facility with the Kona 2 to D5…as I don’t want to go trying to mess with a D5. So no Kona for me.
I do have the Aurora Pipe…yet to use it, but I have it…

yeah, and I paid with hard currency for all of them ( still awaiting delivery however. I have to admit I was lucky enough to work on one of the 1700’s 7 months ago on location in Seattle and I was instantly hooked. It fit my needs at a good price. remember that I am on the road 200+ days a year. Compactness without loss of quality was a big factor.

yeah and the camera is NOT mine. I was hired for my opinions on the post process. (me, opinions??), I consult on this type of stuff for a living, it’s my job. This is not the first company that has asked me to look at their technology and give an opinion. Remember the “Uncompressed on a Laptop” demo from MWSF’02.Funny though, as much as I work in 720p most of my delivery is still 1080 24, with more and more on SR than D5 lately.
and there is not a single thing wrong with that Aurora Pipe Pro, it is a great product.

How do you have it hooked up to your edit system?
Which PCI video card (AJA/BM/etc.) are you using and which inputs to the monitor?
Any hiccups from FCP playback to this monitor?Thanks,

I have an AJA IO with a Kona 2/FCP Studio setup. The Kona 2 runs component out to the monitor VGA-in and so far, so good. DVCProHD footage looks flawless and the monitor knows to autoselect whatever signal is being sent in. 480i footage looks really great too.
The monitor has an HDMI input that can handle DVI, but no direct DVI input (I guess there’s an adapter?). Obviously, I’d prefer an HDMI or DVI connect from the IO, but the component looks good enough.
HDV footage is 99% good, but there is a weird thing where I get some dancing colored pixels in darker areas of some shots. It’s a little weird to figure out, but I don’t seem to have them as much when I use the VGA HD input.
All in all, I like this monitor alot. I almost bought a 37in westinghouse a few months back with no HD Tuner, but this one has it built in. I dunno if it is just because I’m close to the warehouse, but Costco says it’ll take 15 days to deliver, but I got it in 3.
All in all, it’s a great HD monitor and you cannot beat the price.
