JKL Problems
We finally upraded our Final Cut systems to version 5 over the weekend. Some of our editors are used to using the JKL keys for locating. We have found that under version 5, this “transport” function has quite a lag, and if one shuttles very quitckly the system will just hang. We had no problems with Final Cut 4.5
Has anyone else experienced this problem and are there any optimizations you can suggest.
Our systems are mostly Dual 2Gigs with 2.5 GB of RAM. All systems have KonaLS cards, and are running OS X 10.3.9. I’ve experimented with both Quicktime 7.0.3 and 7.0.1.

FCP 5 and 10.3.9 isn’t my favorite at all… I’d do a clean install of Tiger and then reinstall FCP 5 over it after running software update to get to 10.4.3, and QT 7.0.3. FCP 5 will run in 10.3.9, just not very well…

I’ve had the same problem for quite a while now – most annoying. Ever since upgrading to 10.4 and FCP 5. We suspect our AJA KONA2 card cuz it doesn’t happen on our other 2 suites which are BlackMagic DeckLinks. We are now on FCP 5.0.3, MacOS 10.4.2 and QT 7.0.3

This whole move the mouse/wacom while shuttling is just not funny anymore…
Its really f****ing with my workflow, and apple just doesn’t seam to care.
ive called them many many many times, and they act as if they have never heard of this problem before. -
Thanks for all the help. I removed the video card completely from one system, and the problem did not go away, so it is not a Kona issue as reported above. I have confirmed however, the connection between the Wacom/Mouse and shuttling. I have reported this as a bug to some folks on the inside at Apple. Hopefully, we will get some kind of response.

It’s not always Apple’s fault, so keep it cool on the Caps bro.
They read this forum very regularly and are “people” too.To me it sounds like user error.
Have you tried setting your Frame Offset to Zero?
All capture card users need that to be set to zero,
while DV users might feel more comfortable with a 4 frame offset.
The default is 4 since most users are DV. A playback offset of any kind will make
JKL somewhat sluggish.FCP>System Settings>Playback Control
Try it out.

You should probably consider yourself blessed.
It happens when previewing footage in the viewer. Watch footage, use jkl, proceed to an all-stop until I move my pen away from the tablet.
Since I use a pen, it’s easy for me to move and doesn’t really bother me, others may not be so happy. I don’t know if it’s apple, perhaps it’s wacom. Who knows, but it seems to affect some people in this forum so you should be lucky it’s not you Kevin.

I’m not trying to lay blame, but at the same time, this is most definitely a bug in Final Cut Pro 5. How, you may ask, can I be ss sure? Very simple: The only thing I changed was upgrading from FCP 4.5 to 5. OS, hardware, drivers are all the same, and the problem exists on systems which don’t even have a Wacom Tablet.
Setting the offset only corrects sync between canvas and client monitors… which isn’t this issue.

NO not sluggish, FCP comes to a STOP.
this is not a wacom problem, not an offset issue, AND NOT USER ERROR (and thats pretty lame to be accused of when this is a problem that 12 different editors i work with are having, i experience at work and at home, multiple people experience here on the cow.)
Im quite surprised YOU yourself haven’t experienced.
Play in fast forward, and move your mouse.Why dont you “TRY IT OUT”.
