Problems panning audio tracks….Please help!
Am having problems with audio tracks. For example: when capturing a clip where a person is talking, there would be 2 tracks of audio – one a radio mic (Track 1) and another mic (Tack 2)capturing ambient sound. I often delete the ambient track (Track 2) and am left with the the main audio from a radio mic (Track 1).
The problem is when I open up the main audio track (Track 1) and pan the track from -1 to 0. It says it has done it but the sound still comes out of 1 speaker instead of both.
It is a very recent problem that I wonder may be something to do with preferences or settings.
We have had no problems with the speakers at all.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

Its still happenning, it’s like the pan function’s been disabled.

Just to make SURE your audio is working from both speakers,
DUPLICATE the Channel 1 audio and put it on Channel 2 as well.To do this, click on the ch. 1 clip and hold down both “shift” and “option” and drag the clip to ch.2 (you’ll end up with identical clips on both tracks).
See how that plays.
Adjust the pan controls on either clip and test again. -
Yea have duplicated Track 1 onto track 2 and now track one will only go left and two will only go right. What gets me however is that you shouldn’t have to do this. I should be able to have a single track and be able to pan it to 0 and have it come out of both speakers!Voice’s should only be on a single track and music should be on two.
Anyone else got any thoughts?

Select he clip and hit option-l this will “de-stereoize” it :^) The clip should now be mono.

Be patient. This process needs to be a dialog.
My guess is that you have the audio outputs set incorrectly.
Click once on the Timeline window.
Hit Command (apple) and 0 (zero) to open the “Sequence Settings” window.
Choose “Audio Outputs” tab.
Click on “Load Audio Outputs Preset”
Choose “Default Stero Preset”.This should give you the settings
Outputs: 2

Just place the single audio track in your timeline and go Modify > Audio > Pan Center. If you’re trying to pan to Center in the Viewer, this never seems to work all that well, easier to do it in the timeline.
For what it’s worth, I’ve found that panning a single audio track to center never sounds as good as two audio tracks panned left and right. You lose some tonal value when you split one channel across two channels. I always copy the single audio track and paste it into Channel Two, then pan then left and right.

Does it really mater if we are going to A-Pac for DVD with 2/0(L,R) ?
