I’ve painlessly migrated to 10.4.2 from 10.3.4, along w/ FCP 5 from 4.5, using the “fresh drive install” method. (As an aside, I was wowed by the Upgrade Assistant & how it copied all user data & applications from the Panther drive I had alongside the fresh HDD, resulting in only 1 small USB app not working afterwards…. kudos Apple!!)
I’ve a couple projects that have months of 4.5 work invested, and have been hesitant to open them in FCP 5 – to the point where I’ve been rebooting off the Panther/FCP 4.5 system drive for any changes to these projects. QUESTION: 1] do I have nothing to fear? shall I go ahead & work on these in 5? 2] are FCP 5 project files backwards-compatible w/ 4.5? 3] if I save a backup of the FCP 4.5 file, I assume I could always revert to this as a last resort?.
Thanks, as always for everyone’s help!

I never had any problems when I did exactly what you are proposing to do… and YES, it is a good idea to backup your FCP project files anyways.

Better safe than sorry, in event a worst case scenario happens – your hard drive dies or something.
