Sony HDV camcorder won’t show HDV on external monitor from FCP HD?
My new HVR-A1E Pal can’t transfer HD video from Final Cut HD to my external monitor via iLINK . The HD video is also don’t shown in the camera display.
No problems when I work in DV format and all other functions works good.Any ideas please?

FCP HD doesn’t work with HDV in it’s native format. You need FCP 5 for that. But even then you cannot view the image on an external monitor via Firewire. The only HD format that FCP can do that with is DVCPRO HD.

To view HDV on an external monitor you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink or AJA offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed.
HDV cannot be played out of FCP via Firewire because it’s Long GOP structure is too taxing on your processors to spare the system resources needed to drive an external monitor.

Yet another reason why HDV is a format I avoid as long as humanly possible. DVCPro HD is just so easy.

I have yet to be presented with HDV footage, but if I got any, I would offline it DV then online it 8 or 10-bit uncompressed.

I would just capture it straight up as 8bit uncompressed here I suppose, depending on how much material there was. It would certainly make it much easier to work with than native HDV.

Just capture Native HDV, if you have a fast system, working in HDV is only marginally slower than DV, then when you are finished render out your finished timeline to uncompressed HD for Titles/FX the quality is superb and the workflow is very easy.
The mistake a lot of people are making is assuming that HDV is a “cheap” option, hence the ENDLESS posts on here about not being able to monitor it through the camera!
If you use the format in a professional setup, it has a lot of advantages. It is great for “B” roll shooting alongside higher end HD, it’s got us out of trouble a couple of times where the main camera has missed the action or been a little soft (happens in HD!)
Those who are turning their noses up at HDV are missing out on a valuable (and Cheap) extra tool to work with.

This is not true for the Decklink cards, at least. You don’t even need an HD capable card. All Decklink cards can perform a software RT downconversion to their component/SDI outputs and AFAIK this works too with HDV.

Well, I may be possible whenever the terabyte processor is available. It way too taxing on the processor of the computer to output HDV thru firewire. And I’m pretty sure that you will this is the case with all of the editing packages that have HDV support.
