I am having a problem when using Capture Now for longer than five minutes. Anything shorter, and I can end the capture fine. If I go longer, the system freezes with a spinning beach ball. When I force quit and look at my media drive, it is filled to capacity by a corrupted media file. I am using FCP 4.5 in OS 10.3.9. I tried capturing to a different media drive, same problem. I have trashed preferences, performed system maintenance, fixed permissions and rebuilt prebindings.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

This is a commonly-reported problem with some systems.
The way around it is to manually mark in and out points, log these first, and then use Batch capture.

Don’t use Capture Now on longer clips.

Unfortunately, I am not capturing from a camera or deck, I am capturing through a Canopus ADVC-100. I can’t mark in and out points.

Are you by any chance capturing to a FW drive and not using a FW cardbus on a Powerbook or do not have an additional FW card installed on a desktop?

That may be your problem. Video is a huge bandwidth hog, even lil’ol DV. Sometimes one can make it through with out a second FW bus, but oftentimes one can’t.

Nope, internal HD, Seagate 7200 RPM drive. Also previously used a Western Digital Caviar 7200 RPM drive… worked great until just recently, then this problem killed it. I’ve done just about everything except reinstall Final Cut. Looks like that’s what I’m going to end up doing.

I’m also having the same problem with freezes during Capture Now with FCP 4.5 in OS 10.3.8 using the Canopus ADVC-100. Did you figure out a fix or did anyone have a solution?

Eventually, I decided to drop my media drive from three partitions to two. Now everything works fine. Also make sure that you haven’t upgraded to QuickTime7. OS 10.3 doesn’t like it.
