  • can I increase the size of the audio waveform display on the timeline?

Posted by Rick Dolishny on May 26, 2005 at 2:36 pm

I find the waveform displays are all really small. Is there a way to increase the size?

I’m not talking about dragging the horizontal bar down to make the track bigger, although that’s sort of the effect I’m going for. I’m hoping to artificially increase the perceived volume of the tracks to help me find cues during the quieter moments in a read. Thanks.

For those of you who have used Discreet Edit I think the command was CTRL SHIFT W.

    Rick,

Peak DV which you should have, had a gain adjustment feature. It increases the gain and changes the waveform accordingly, just be careful not to overdo it.

You’re talking about scaling the waveform up visually without affecting it’s volume yeah? Unfortunately there isn’t a way to do this, good feature request though.

This request has been made over and over by myself and others to people directly on the FCP team. I started asking for this back at FCP 2. I was disappointed, again, that it hasn’t been implemented in FCP 5. But the FCP rep told me it was implemented in Soundtrack Pro. That still doesn’t solve the problem however. Oh well, there’s always FCP 6 (18 months from now).

Can’t you guys just zoom in on the track?

Zooming in on the track does not expand the height of the waveform. It only shows more detail in an already flat waveform. Most video and audio edit programs give you theis ability. Of course Vegas does this nicely, as does ProTools, DP, Logic, Peak and now Soundtrack Pro, but not FCP.

Yes. Sounds like I’m not the only one to ask for this. Thanks, all!

See, this is where you loose me. What I’m hearing is that you want the audio waveform to be taller, but you want the track that displays it to be shorter. To me it sounds like someone is saying they’d like a bigger picture on their TV, but they don’t want a bigger TV.

Whenever I need to see a big waveform in the timeline, I just make the track(s) bigger. No need for a feature request because the feature already exists. Plus, I’ve found that if I made one track bigger by dragging, clicking on any of the track size icons at the bottom left of the timeline sets the height all of the tracks, so with 1 click I can make it (or them) smaller again.

Are you editing on the Sequence Timeline or in the Viewer?

Double click your clip to put it in the Viewer and then drag the Audio tab to the Sequence Timeline window. You should then have an editable audio waveform the length of your Timeline Sequence window. You can zoom in to any level and still be able to see a lot more of your audio than you would in the viewer. It will not increase the default height that you see in the Viewer, but you should have more information than just editing in your program sequence track height.

When you are done just Ctrl+click the Tab and select close.

Not sure if this workaround helps you, but it has certainly helped me.

Not so. If you have low levels and you need to get into the waveform to perform a precision cut you can’t see it.
Increasing the track size does scale the waveform, but not disproportionately. In Avid you can increase the waveform size irrespective of the volume.

Exactly. Making the track height bigger just gives you even more empty space which could be filled with a waveform!
