Can you avoid duplicate clips with multiple editors using one project?
Hi all,
I’m converted from FCP7 and am going a bit crazy with media management in Premiere Pro CC 2015.
We have two editors working on one project — (one makes assemblies while the other fine cuts them). However, we can’t really just import sequences into each other’s project without Premiere duplicating all the media associated with those sequences.
In FCP7, clips in the browser were just reference — if you deleted them, it wouldn’t affect your sequences. In Premiere, if I import a new sequence, it will import ALL of the associated media of that sequence without the connivence of just deleting it… which is quickly getting out of hand.
Has anyone figured out a way around this? Can you just redirect the media in the new sequence to the original dailies in your browser? I’ve tried forcing the clips in the sequence offline, but since they’re still associated with the clips in the browser, that’s clearly not the solution.
Is there any other way around this other than dealing with duplicate files or manually replacing media in each sequence?

can you try importing the sequences between projects using the media browser panel?
this should avoid the duplication…

Prior to beginning work on the master project, make sure that you enable ‘Write XMP ID to files on import’ in Preferences > Media.
This will tag each piece of media with a unique ID, which Premiere can keep track of. Then it will always recognize duplicate clips.

“There will be one “master” project for each production that you are working on. This project is read/write.
You import other projects from other collaborators via inspecting the project file itself via the master project’s Media Browser (you can open multiple Media Browser and save multiple favorite Media Browsers). These projects will be read only.

Did you find a good workaround for this? I know some other users mentioned using the “write xmp id on import” feature, but to my knowledge, that doesn’t apply to XML imports.
