Premiere and After Affects dynamic link issue
Hi,
I have been editing a music video in premiere and brought all of the project into After Effects via the dynamic link to add the effects required to the footage.
This is the first time I have used the dynamic link and I’ve noticed the original cross fade transitions I applied in Premiere have now been removed.
Is there a reason for this? I know I could re-apply in AE but this seems very unproductive and I like the original transitions I applied in Premiere anyway.
Also is there a reason why the premiere footage changes to 1 single layer of footage when using the dynamic link?

Hi…
Dynamic link really wasn’t intended to move your entire sequence to AE.
It was really meant as away to send individual shots over(sub groupings of related clips)…make changes in AE…and see the changes in the context of the edit.
sets are clips that are sent over are replaced with after effects “composition.”
So….since you sent over the entire timeline…
Basically…you now have 1 BIG comp in PPro project.
since you have done it it this way….and you are kind of “committed” at this point….
dissolves can be recreated in AE via opacity keyframes….and there should be some layers in AE that indicate where those should fall.
You can render out of AE to a new file
or you can “render and replace” PPro.
I don’t think having 1 huge clip dynamically linked will be of any really bidirectional benefit myself…
so I’d probably just finish and render out of after effects if it was me….

I guessed that maybe it wasn’t the intended purpose to bring the whole project into AE. Thing is I also prefer to colour correct and grade in AE as i feel the built in tools are better. Maybe its just because I’m more familiar with AE over Premiere though.
I think what I’ll do is render the couple of clips that have the transitions out of premiere and bring back into AE and render the final thing out of AE like you suggested.

If you really like to grade entirely in AE….
you can literally import your PPro Project into AE.
I mistakenly said in the previous post that there would be layers in your AE comp to indicate where dissolves go…
this is true when you IMPORT but not when you dynamic link.

As Alex said, PPro to AE really isn’t the optimal workflow as it’s designed by Adobe…
However, if you know that’s the workflow you want, it means you need to plan for it…i.e. using opacity fades and overlapping clips as opposed to dissolve transitions on inline edits in this particular case.
