Media Cache on Shared Network
Posted by Alex Neuman on October 30, 2014 at 6:10 pmHi All:
We have 5 Adobe Premiere Pro CC stations and are using shared storage. We are not sure what’s the best way to deal with Media Cache files. Should all machines point to the same folder on our SAN?
Projects are not tied to one station meaning that we might work on one machine one day and then the same project gets opened in another room. FCP 7 created a folder for each project which made it easier to deal, delete, etc. But it seems Premiere uses the same folder for all the projects. We don’t want to store them locally because we need to open the same project in other stations and would like to keep all the rendered files so we don’t need to render again. Some of our projects are very big so that would not work for us.
All Mac based, Adobe Premiere Pro 2014, shred storage is DDP by Ardis, we are on OSX 10.9.2
Thanks!

October 30, 2014 at 7:32 pmYou can try storing the media cache on the network storage but it’s not advisable. One the latency is higher and 2 often times the media cache reference is ignored by the application when on a network drive. If you do that be prepared to watch it conform often times again when it’s loaded.

So how are people sharing projects with Adobe Premiere Pro? It seems that it works great as a stand alone application but Adobe has a very long way to go to for people that need to share media and projects.
Thanks,

October 30, 2014 at 9:36 pmThey put the projects and media on the network storage and the media cache locally. The media cache rebuilds when it’s not present. The preview files that are generated from rendering are on the network storage because those default to follow the project. Adobe has never recommended the media cache be located anywhere but locally even in a shared environment. I am not sure what the issue is there.

Thanks a lot for your reply, I am still confused, the preferences have two options:
1-Save Media Cache files next to originals
2-Media Cache Database
Which one should be local and which one should be on the network?
We’ve found that #1 generates .pek files all over the place and it’s very annoying. My issue is opening the same project in a different room and the time it takes to load re-generate audio waveforms, etc.
Thanks!

October 31, 2014 at 2:23 pmYes the 1st is the actual media cache files with the audio conform. That will re-conform every time Adobe doesn’t see them available. The database files should also be local as well though which is the 2nd. I know it takes longer to have those locally but that is what Adobe recommends. You can try them on a network storage but like I said they may be ignored by the Adobe application and then they regenerate anyway. You also have higher latency which can effect your realtime playback.

I think that is how we had it originally and we started playing with it once we started having playback problems, but I’ll go back to Adobe’s and yours recommendation and see if it improves our issues.
Thanks a lot for your help!

October 31, 2014 at 4:56 pmHi Alex,
Have you tested pointing the media cache files and media cache database to a SAN in the 2014.1 (8.1) release? We did a bit of work in this area to help the shared project workflow.
Let us know your results.

First of all, thanks a lot for your post, it is great when you see companies jump in threads to solve our problems.
I have not tested this out yet, but after your recommendation I of course will.
Do I point all the 5 machines to the same folder for Media Cache Files?
Do I point all 5 machines to the same folder for the Media Cache Database? Thanks again, I really appreciate your help!

November 7, 2014 at 12:59 pmHi Peter,
What work did you do? It would be great to know what the optimisations were in technical terms so we can work out if they address the blockers for us keeping media cache db and files on share storage.
The problem with media cache files on shared storage is often about the shared storage’s ability to deliver the tiny files to the machine. Particularly if optimised for streaming big media files.

November 7, 2014 at 6:53 pmHi Alex,
“Do I place my Media Cache Database and Media Cache files on the SAN?”
For 8.1 I wouldn’t do this. There are a few cases where we would constantly regenerate PEK and CFA files on the the server.
“Do I point all the 5 machines to the same folder for Media Cache Files?”
This should work fine in 8.1.
“Do I point all 5 machines to the same folder for the Media Cache Database?”
For 8.1 I suggest you use local media cache database locations. We hope to have additional work done in our upcoming release that is optimized to use shared media cache database locations.
I’ll try to remember to update this forum as changes come. Feel free to nag me too 🙂
